“Nothing yet.”
“You're treating me like a criminal.”
“No.”
She looked at him.
“If I were treating you like a criminal, this room would look different.”
The officers exchanged glances.
Hale said:
“My office.”
Maya shook her head.
“Not yet.”
“Agent Brooks—”
“Captain, I need the evidence intake log for the last six hours.”
Reyes's face tightened.
Maya saw.
There.
A reaction.
Small.
But enough.
Hale saw her watching him.
He turned toward Reyes.
“Danny.”
Reyes looked at him.
“What?”
“What happened in the garage?”
“I told you.”
“No.”
Hale's voice hardened.
“You told us why you claim you arrested her.”
“I’m asking what happened before.”
Reyes looked around.
“This is ridiculous.”
Maya stepped closer.
“Who was the man in the gray sedan?”
Reyes went silent.
Priya looked between them.
Hale's face changed.
“What gray sedan?”
Maya answered without taking her eyes off Reyes.
“Municipal garage level three.”
“6:42 p.m.”
“Male, approximately forty-five to fifty-five.”
“Gray overcoat.”
“Black leather briefcase.”
“He entered through the east stairwell.”
“Sergeant Reyes met him beside a city impound SUV.”
Reyes shouted:
“I did not meet anyone.”
Maya continued.
“They spoke for forty-three seconds.”
“The man transferred a small padded envelope.”
Reyes's complexion changed.
Maya's voice stayed calm.
“I photographed it.”
Reyes's eyes went toward her bag.
Maya noticed.
“So now we know why you searched my purse first.”
Reyes pointed.
“She was photographing restricted areas!”
Maya nodded.
“Yes.”
“Because I had a federal warrant.”
That silenced him.
Captain Hale looked toward the officers.
“Everybody except Malik and Lieutenant Brennan, clear the immediate area.”
Nobody argued.
Within seconds, the booking desk was nearly empty.
Hale turned toward Maya.
“Tell me what this is.”
Maya looked at the closed office door.
“Do you trust everyone in this building?”
Hale hesitated.
Too long.
Maya nodded.
“That answers it.”
