Outside, Benny had been trying to recreate safety using whatever shape he could find.
Inside, he was beginning to seek safety from relationships.
The old need had not disappeared.
It had found somewhere real to go.
Benny’s personality emerged rapidly after that. He stole slippers and carried them proudly without destroying them. He followed Walter into the yard and copied almost everything the older dog did, including several habits Claire wished Walter had not taught him. He discovered that people opening the refrigerator deserved immediate investigation and that a couch designed for three adults could somehow become completely full once a puppy decided to stretch across it.
The frightened animal from the security footage did not vanish overnight.
Some mornings, sudden noises still sent Benny toward the nearest wall. New visitors made him cautious. If someone reached directly over his head before he was ready, he lowered himself and moved away.
Claire treated those moments as information rather than failure.
Benny was learning.
The important part was that he recovered.
A visitor might worry him for ten minutes, then become someone whose shoe he slept against. A new room might make him pause in the doorway, then become another place where he could relax. Progress was not the moment fear disappeared completely; it was the growing amount of life Benny discovered on the other side of it.
Several months after his rescue, Helen asked whether she could visit.
She arrived at Claire’s house carrying something so large that half of it was visible through the rear window of her SUV.
The giant stuffed dog had come with her.
Claire laughed when Helen opened the hatch.
“I cannot believe you brought that thing.”
“I wanted to see what he’d do.”
They carried it into the living room and positioned it against the wall.
Benny and Walter were outside.
When Claire opened the back door, Walter walked in first. Benny followed, then stopped abruptly when he saw the familiar shape.
Nobody spoke.
Benny approached slowly.
He sniffed one of the enormous paws, then moved toward the chest where he had once slept. He inspected the toy for nearly a minute.
Helen expected the old behavior to return.
