Helen opened it while standing beside the stuffed dog in the gift shop.

She smiled.

Months earlier, Benny had been trying to recreate that exact feeling using polyester stuffing and fabric.

Now the thing beside him was warm.

It breathed.

It moved when he moved.

And when he woke, it would still be there.

Winter eventually returned.

The first serious snowfall came almost exactly a year after Helen discovered the muddy paw prints on the stuffed dog.

By then, Benny had grown into a sturdy young dog with longer legs, a broader chest, and the same darker ears Marjorie remembered from the puppy near the old maintenance shed. Robert sent Helen a video of him running through fresh snow with Sadie.

Benny buried his face in a drift, came up sneezing, and immediately did it again.

There was no hesitation.

No desperate search for shelter.

No careful approach toward an empty porch after midnight.

That evening, Robert sent another photograph.

Benny and Sadie were asleep near the couch.

They were pressed together so closely that it was difficult to tell where one dog ended and the other began.

Helen stood near the gift shop window and looked at the giant stuffed dog.

A year earlier, the toy had looked enormous compared with the tiny puppy curled inside it. In her memory, Benny almost disappeared beneath its arm.

At the time, Helen had thought the saddest part was that the stuffed dog could not actually love him.

Later she changed her mind.

The saddest part was not that Benny had found comfort in something artificial.

It was that, for a while, something artificial had been the safest comfort available.

There was also something hopeful hidden inside that same image.
