Medication or possible exposure history if available.

Changes in appetite, thirst, weight, behavior, coordination, or awareness.

Depending on those findings, further testing could be considered.

The goal was not simply to stop staff from seeing Rocco become stiff.

It was to understand what process might be causing the episodes.

There Was No Responsible Way to Guess the Cause

Rocco was seven.

That fact mattered clinically, but it did not produce a diagnosis.

Neither did his breed.

Neither did the fact that he lived in a shelter.

Recurrent seizure-like episodes in an adult dog can have different explanations, and the appropriate workup depends on the individual patient.

The shelter did not know yet whether the problem originated primarily in the brain or whether another medical condition was affecting neurological function.

That uncertainty was exactly why Rocco had been moved for closer medical care.

Staff Started Watching the Moments Before He Fell Asleep

Because several episodes began while Rocco was resting, caregivers became especially attentive during quiet periods.

But they did not keep waking him to check whether he was responsive.

Sleep was still necessary.

The objective was observation, not constant stimulation.

If an episode occurred, they wanted to see its natural beginning.

Sometimes nothing happened.

Rocco simply slept.

Those ordinary hours mattered too.

After One Episode, Rocco Didn't Try to Stand Immediately

The stiffness faded.

His legs relaxed.

His jaw became still.

Rocco remained on his side.

A worker stayed nearby.

For several seconds, his eyes moved around the room.

Then he lifted his head.

He did not attempt to get up.

The worker waited.

Eventually Rocco's attention appeared more focused.

Only later did he reposition himself.

It was a quieter recovery than some of the previous events.

Encouraging—but not an answer.

A Better Recovery Period Didn't Mean the Problem Was Gone

Neurological episodes can vary.

One may look more dramatic than another.

The period afterward may also differ.

That meant staff could not use one milder event to conclude that Rocco was recovering.

The larger pattern mattered.

Frequency.

Duration.

Severity.

Responsiveness.

Recovery.

And any changes occurring between episodes.

Those were the details his veterinary team needed.

Rocco Could Still Have Good Parts of the Day

He could eat.

He could notice a familiar caregiver.

He could settle comfortably on his bed.

At times, someone seeing him for only a few minutes might never realize why he was in the medical wing.

That contrast was one of the hardest parts of his case.

Rocco did not look critically abnormal every second.

The frightening events came and went.

Then he was simply Rocco again.

Until His Body Locked Stiff

There was little warning.
