Ruby hears the footsteps before she sees anyone.

They are still several kennels away.

Her head rises.

Her body becomes rigid.

Another step echoes through the hallway.

Ruby moves.

But the three-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier does not run toward the kennel door to see who is coming.

She runs in the opposite direction.

Straight toward the back corner.

Then Ruby stands on her hind legs.

Both front paws hit the wall.

She scratches upward.

Once.

Again.

Again.

Her nails scrape against the smooth surface as her body stretches as high as it can reach.

There is nothing above her.

No opening.

No ledge.

No place to climb.

Ruby keeps trying anyway.

Eventually, her hind legs can no longer support the effort.

She slides down the wall.

Her belly reaches the floor.

And there she stays—flattened beneath the same wall she had been desperately trying to climb only seconds earlier.

Ruby Was Found Trapped Inside an Empty Room

Before arriving at the shelter, Ruby had reportedly spent days trapped inside a vacant room.

Exactly what happened before she was found is not fully known.

No one knows how she became trapped.

No one knows everything she heard outside that room or how often people approached without reaching her.

That uncertainty matters.

It would be easy to watch Ruby react to footsteps and create a detailed explanation about what she believes is happening.

Ruby cannot tell anyone that.

What the shelter can document is the behavior happening now.

Approaching footsteps repeatedly trigger an intense attempt to move away—and upward.

She Doesn't Try the Kennel Door

That is one of the strangest details.

The gate is the actual exit.

Ruby ignores it.

When frightened, she moves toward the solid back wall instead.

That tells staff her behavior is not a calm attempt to solve the physical problem of leaving the kennel.

She is reacting.

Distance appears more important than logic.

The footsteps come from the hallway.

Ruby goes as far from them as the kennel allows.

When horizontal distance runs out, she starts trying to go vertically.

The Wall Gives Her Nothing

Her paws strike painted concrete or sealed block.

There is no grip.

Ruby's nails slide downward.

She jumps again.

Her front legs reach higher.
