Drops.
Jumps again.
The entire old pattern returns.
That does not erase the calmer morning.
Triggers can add together.
A dog capable of handling one mild stressor may become overwhelmed when several occur at once.
Understanding that threshold helps caregivers avoid asking too much too quickly.
Medical Evaluation Still Matters
Ruby's behavior has an obvious situational trigger, but physical health should not be ignored.
Pain can increase reactivity.
Vision or hearing problems can affect how a dog interprets approaching people.
Any injuries from repeated wall climbing need attention.
If Ruby's fear remains severe enough to compromise routine care or put her at risk, veterinary behavioral assessment may also be appropriate.
She Should Not Be Made to Practice Panic
There is no benefit in repeatedly walking toward Ruby until she stops climbing from exhaustion.
That would not prove she has learned that people are safe.
It could simply teach her that escape attempts do not work.
Carefully controlled exposure is different.
Ruby needs experiences that remain below the point where she loses the ability to cope.
One Afternoon, Ruby Finds Another Place to Go
Footsteps appear in the hallway.
Ruby stands.
Her body moves backward.
She looks toward the corner.
Then she notices the sheltered resting area nearby.
Ruby moves into it.
She turns around.
Her chest stays low.
She watches the entrance.
The footsteps pass.
Ruby remains inside.
But she never stands against the wall.
Her nails never scrape.
Her body never falls.
She is still hiding.
For now, hiding safely is enough.
The Next Milestone Is Coming Back Out
At first, Ruby may remain in the retreat long after the hallway becomes quiet.
Later, perhaps that changes.
Footsteps approach.
Ruby retreats.
The person passes.
Silence returns.
Thirty seconds later, Ruby's head appears.
She looks toward the hallway.
Then steps out.
Eventually, she returns to her bed.
That would show that her fear has developed an ending.
Someday, Footsteps May Become Ordinary
That is the larger goal.
Someone walks down the kennel row.
Ruby hears them.
