Her face changed.

Not relief immediately.

Fear.

That broke something inside him.

Children should not be afraid when the safe parent arrives.

They should not wonder which adult the safe parent will believe.

Aaron walked closer.

Celeste saw him.

Her face went pale.

“Aaron.”

He looked at the counter.

Then at the shopping bags.

Then at Nia.

“What happened?”

Celeste stepped toward him.

“This store is being ridiculous.”

Aaron did not look away from his daughter.

“Nia?”

She glanced toward Celeste.

Aaron saw it.

That tiny permission check.

His stomach twisted.

He crouched.

“What happened?”

Nia whispered:

“Nothing.”

He heard Danielle in his own head.

Watch the word nothing. Kids use it when something feels too dangerous to name.

Aaron had forgotten Danielle saying that.

Now he remembered perfectly.

“Nia.”

His voice softened.

“You’re not in trouble.”

Her eyes filled.

Celeste interrupted.

“She’s upset because I told her she didn’t need another pair of shoes.”

Aaron looked toward Nia’s feet.

The separating sole was obvious from where he crouched.

He touched one sneaker gently.

“How long has this been like that?”

Nia shrugged.

Celeste said:

“Two days.”

Jordan spoke quietly.

“More.”

Everyone turned.

Celeste’s eyes sharpened.

Jordan stared at the floor.

Aaron stood.

“How long?”

The boy swallowed.

“Like two weeks.”

Celeste snapped:

“Jordan.”

Aaron looked at her.

One look.

She stopped.

He turned toward the counter.

“Which shoes were Nia buying?”

The cashier pointed toward the white-and-lavender box.

Aaron picked it up.

Price:

$64.00.

Then he looked at the other purchases.

Some boxes had price labels above two hundred dollars.

He looked at Celeste.

“Which card did you use?”

She crossed her arms.

“You already know.”

“Yes.”

Aaron’s voice remained quiet.

“I want to hear you say it.”

Celeste glanced around.

People were watching now.

She lowered her voice.

“Not here.”

“Which card?”

“The trust card.”

Nia looked toward Aaron.

Aaron saw the question in her face.

He kept himself calm for her.

“Why?”

Celeste stared.

“What do you mean why?”

“Why are Jordan and Layla’s purchases being charged to Nia’s trust?”

Celeste’s expression hardened.

“Because we are a family.”

“No.”

The word came quickly.

Clear.

“We are a family.”

Aaron pointed toward the card still lying on the counter.

“That account is not family money.”

Celeste laughed nervously.

“You’re making this into something it isn’t.”

“What is it?”

“You know Nia is going to inherit hundreds of thousands of dollars.”
