The white Lincoln SUV struck the enormous tractor tire with a sound like a metal gate being torn from its hinges.

Dust exploded across the farm road. The front-right corner of the luxury vehicle crumpled inward, its grille fractured, and the hood buckled against the massive black tire of the green John Deere. The tractor rocked slightly on its suspension but remained exactly where its owner had parked it, beside a field of Nebraska corn waiting for harvest.

Thirty-five-year-old Hank Briggs stood frozen beside the machinery.

He was a handsome, broad-shouldered farmer with short, slightly messy light-brown hair, sharp blue eyes, and a rugged face marked by years of working outdoors. He wore a brown-and-gray plaid work shirt, faded jeans, and heavy leather boots. A folded county survey map was tucked into the back pocket of his trousers.

Twenty yards away, two police officers turned toward the collision.

Their patrol cruiser had been parked near the entrance to the field because someone had reported that agricultural machinery was blocking an HOA access road. The officers had barely stepped onto the dirt shoulder when the white Lincoln accelerated toward the stationary tractor.

Now the SUV sat crookedly against its enormous front wheel, steam rising from its damaged radiator.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then the driver's door flew open.

A blonde woman in an expensive hot-pink blazer climbed out, stumbled onto the dusty road, and began screaming.

"Arrest him! He's trespassing on HOA property!"

Her name was Moren Falstead.

She was fifty-two years old, president of the Prairie Meadows Homeowners Association, and had spent nearly a year trying to force Hank Briggs to surrender part of the farm his family had owned for three generations.

She pointed toward the tractor.

"He deliberately blocked me! Look what he did to my car!"

Officer Daniel Reyes, a forty-one-year-old patrol officer with a calm expression, approached cautiously.

"Ma'am, are you injured?"

"I'm fine! Arrest him!"

His partner, Officer Aaron Collins, glanced toward the damaged SUV before looking back at the farmer.

"Hank, stay where you are for a moment, please."

Hank nodded.

He wasn't moving anyway.

He was still trying to understand why a woman driving an expensive luxury vehicle had apparently steered directly toward a tractor weighing several tons.

Moren stormed forward.
