Earl’s eyes changed.
He held a leather folio.
Lila recognized Cole’s railway papers.
“Put them down.”
Earl smiled.
“Move.”
“No.”
“Lila.”
“No.”
He stepped closer.
She backed toward the hall.
Not courage.
Strategy.
Distance.
If she reached the bell rope—
Earl saw.
He lunged.
Lila grabbed the heavy brass lamp from the table and swung it into his forearm.
He cursed.
The folio dropped.
She ran.
Earl caught her shawl.
Fabric tore.
Lila screamed.
The sound carried.
Earl tried to pull her backward.
Lila was a large woman.
He apparently forgot what mass meant when it refused cooperation.
She planted both feet and threw her weight forward.
Earl lost balance.
Hit the doorframe.
She broke free.
Daniel appeared at the hall entrance.
Then two ranch hands.
Earl reached for his pistol.
Daniel tackled him before he cleared leather.
The fight ended quickly.
Lila stood against the wall shaking.
Daniel looked up.
“You hurt?”
“No.”
“Sure?”
“Yes.”
Earl laughed from the floor.
“You think this matters?”
Daniel twisted his arm farther.
“Keep talking.”
Earl looked at Lila.
“You were supposed to be easy.”
Her fear changed to anger.
“Everyone keeps making that mistake.”
Then another voice came from the entrance.
“Earl.”
Cole.
He had ridden back after seeing the fire.
Earl’s face went white.
Cole crossed the room.
Not fast.
That was worse.
He looked at Lila.
Torn shawl.
Red mark on her wrist.
His expression became terrifying.
Lila stepped between him and Earl.
“No.”
Cole stopped.
“He touched you.”
“Yes.”
“Move.”
“No.”
“Lila.”
“You need him talking.”
“I need him breathing less.”
Daniel coughed.
“Romantic.”
Cole glared.
Lila took his face between both hands.
That shocked him enough to stop.
“Look at me.”
He did.
“I’m here.”
His breathing slowed.
“I’m fine.”
The red mark on her wrist disagreed.
But alive.
Safe.
Cole closed his eyes.
Then opened them.
“Fine.”
Earl exhaled.
Bad idea.
Cole looked toward him.
“You owe her your continued existence.”
Earl stopped smiling.
The fire had been deliberate.
Hay lost.
One shed damaged.
No cattle dead.
Earl’s folio contained railway papers and a copy of the Bennett will.
More importantly, inside his coat was a letter.
From Elias.
Simple instructions.
Take the original rail agreement during the fire. Without it, Cole cannot prove priority rights. Harker will file competing claim Monday. After north water fails, bank pressure begins. We move on estate before winter.
Signed only E.
But handwriting compared with old childhood letters Daniel preserved.
Likely Elias.
Sheriff Price now had conspiracy.
Still needed the bathhouse link.
Earl refused.
Until Harvey told him Elias had promised both men the same twenty acres.
Then loyalty cracked.
Thieves frequently became honest when discovering they had been cheated by other thieves.
Earl admitted blocking the bathhouse vent.
He claimed Elias ordered it.
Who wrote the warning?
He did not know.
