For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then asked.
"How much do they already know?"
The director hesitated.
"Enough to ask questions."
The old man looked toward his desk.
A photograph of his father stood beside a silver clock.
His father had built much of the family's modern hotel empire through aggressive acquisitions.
He often said that hesitation was more dangerous than debt.
The current patriarch had adopted that philosophy.
Perhaps too completely.
He looked toward the windows.
Then spoke.
"Prepare the documents."
The director sounded relieved.
"Everything?"
The billionaire paused.
For a moment, he considered telling the truth.
Allowing the financing team to examine every related-party obligation.
Accepting delays.
Revising the project.
Possibly acknowledging that the family had overextended itself.
But the thought of public humiliation terrified him.
He had spent his adult life presenting himself as a man who never lost control.
He could not imagine standing before investors and admitting that the family's greatest development might depend on restructuring financial obligations he had failed to manage prudently.
So he answered.
"Prepare what they're entitled to see."
The director became quiet.
Then replied.
"Understood."
The call ended.
The patriarch stood alone.
He had no idea how much that sentence would cost him.
Across the city, the blonde hostess woke to discover that two luxury brands had paused discussions about upcoming events.
A magazine postponed a scheduled photo shoot.
Several charities requested that she refrain from representing them while the incident was reviewed.
And the foundation's board asked her to step back from public-facing responsibilities.
She was furious.
Her father had not called.
Her friends were increasingly reluctant to answer messages.
And strangers were criticizing her across the internet.
She called the family's public-relations adviser.
The woman answered cautiously.
"Good morning."
The hostess immediately began complaining.
"This has gotten completely out of control."
The adviser listened.
Then suggested she issue an unambiguous apology acknowledging what happened.
The hostess rejected the idea.
"That would make me look guilty."
The adviser paused.
"There is video."
The blonde woman rolled her eyes.
"People are twisting it."
The adviser remained calm.
"Did you throw the cake?"
The hostess stared.
"What kind of question is that?"
The adviser waited.
The hostess answered angrily.
"Yes."
"And did you push her?"
The blonde woman hesitated.
Then muttered.
"Yes."
The adviser took a breath.
"Then denying those actions will make the situation worse."
The hostess looked away.
For several seconds, she remained quiet.
Then asked.
"Can't you just make people understand that she provoked me?"
The adviser considered.
"What exactly did she do?"
The hostess frowned.
"She was rude."
The adviser waited.
The blonde woman continued.
"She acted like she was better than me."
Another silence.
Then the adviser asked gently.
"Did she threaten you?"
"No."
"Did she physically touch you first?"
The hostess looked irritated.
"No."
"Did she refuse to provide registration information?"
The blonde woman hesitated.
