Then toward the crowd.
His face drained of color.
He hurried forward.
Forgetting the guests.
Forgetting the photographers.
Forgetting the hundreds of people watching his every movement.
He reached his daughter and seized her wrist before she could touch the CEO again.
"What have you done?"
The hostess stared.
"Dad, I was just—"
"WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?"
His voice echoed through the ballroom.
Several guests flinched.
The blonde woman looked stunned.
She had spent her entire life watching her father command boardrooms, financial institutions, and luxury hotels.
He had shouted at executives.
Fired managers.
Humiliated employees.
But he had never looked at her with this particular expression.
Fear.
Absolute fear.
She tried to pull her wrist free.
"Dad, she's lying about who she is!"
The billionaire turned toward her.
His voice dropped.
"No."
He looked toward the Black woman.
Then swallowed.
"She's not."
The hostess stared.
Her father continued.
"That's the CEO of Meridian Global."
A ripple moved through the crowd.
The blonde woman looked toward the Black woman again.
For the first time, she seemed uncertain.
Her father stepped closer.
Then whispered with desperate urgency.
"She's the lead investor behind our entire four-point-two-billion-dollar expansion."
The hostess's eyes widened.
"What?"
The old billionaire stared at her.
"Without her approval, the financing doesn't close."
For a long moment, the blonde woman seemed frozen.
Then she laughed nervously.
"That's impossible."
Her father shook his head.
"She's the person we've been waiting for all evening."
The Black CEO looked toward him.
Her expression remained calm.
But the frosting staining her necklace and gown made the moment almost unbearable.
The billionaire swallowed.
Then tried to smile.
"Ma'am, please. There has been a terrible misunderstanding."
The Black woman looked at him.
"A misunderstanding?"
He nodded urgently.
"My daughter didn't recognize you."
The CEO slowly turned toward the hostess.
Then back at the father.
"She recognized enough to decide I didn't belong."
The older man's mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
The Black woman reached into her small emerald evening clutch.
She removed her phone.
The hostess watched with widening eyes.
The CEO unlocked the screen.
Then called her chief operating officer.
The line connected immediately.
"Good evening."
The CEO looked around the glittering ballroom.
Then toward the trembling billionaire.
"Preserve every pending authorization related to the Harrington expansion."
The older man's expression collapsed.
The CEO continued.
"No new funding releases until our compliance and investment committees review what happened here."
A pause.
"And secure the underlying project records. All of them."
The voice on the telephone became serious.
"Understood."
The CEO looked toward the man who had just called her humiliation a misunderstanding.
Then added.
"Please advise the syndicate administrator that the conditions for tonight's signing have not been satisfied."
The billionaire took a step forward.
"Wait."
She lowered the phone slightly.
He extended one hand.
"Please."
For the first time that evening, his voice sounded genuinely desperate.
