Avery unlocked it.

“Operations.”

Margaret scoffed.

Avery dialed a number that only twenty-three people in the company possessed.

It connected immediately.

“Avery?”

The voice belonged to Meridian’s chief operating officer.

“Nicholas.”

“What happened?”

“Flight 417.”

A pause.

“You’re on 417?”

“Yes.”

“Everything okay?”

“No.”

Avery looked toward the cockpit door.

“Do not release this aircraft.”

Nicholas’s tone changed instantly.

“Why?”

“Passenger security incident.”

“Are you safe?”

“Yes.”

“Crew?”

“Yes.”

“Police?”

“On the way.”

Avery took a breath.

“And Nicholas?”

“Yes?”

“Freeze all changes to passenger manifests, upgrades, VIP seat requests, and lounge overrides associated with this flight.”

Another pause.

“Why?”

“Because I want to know how Margaret Whitfield ended up in 2A.”

Avery ended the call.

Margaret’s face changed.

Not because she understood everything.

Because she understood enough to become afraid.

“Who did you call?”

Avery did not answer.

The cockpit door opened.

Captain Robert Hale stepped into the cabin.

He was fifty-eight and had flown for Meridian almost twenty years.

He saw Daniel first.

Then Margaret.

Then Avery holding a towel against her temple.

His face changed completely.

“Ms. Brooks?”

The entire first-class cabin seemed to inhale together.

Margaret looked at him.

Then at Avery.

Captain Hale moved quickly.

“Are you hurt?”

“I’ll be fine.”

“Do we need medical?”

“Have them check me when security arrives.”

He looked toward Margaret.

“What happened?”

Daniel answered.

“Passenger assault.”

Captain Hale’s jaw tightened.

He looked back at Avery.

“We’re not moving.”

Avery nodded.

“I know.”

Margaret looked between them.

“Wait.”

Nobody responded.

She stared at the captain.

“You know her?”

Captain Hale looked genuinely confused by the question.

“Yes.”

“Who is she?”

The cockpit silence felt almost physical.

Avery would later remember Melissa’s expression most clearly.

Not triumph.

Not amusement.

Relief.

As though something terrible had happened but at least someone with enough power had finally been standing in the right place to force the truth into daylight.

Captain Hale answered.

“That is Avery Brooks.”

Margaret waited.

The name meant nothing yet.

Then Daniel’s face showed that he understood.

The passenger in 1D whispered:

“No way.”

Captain Hale continued.

“Founder and chairwoman of Meridian Air Group.”

Margaret’s complexion changed.

The captain looked toward the cream leather seat behind her.

“And this aircraft belongs to her company.”

Avery corrected quietly:

“To the shareholders.”

Captain Hale almost smiled despite the situation.

“Of course.”

Margaret sank slightly against the partition.

“No.”

Avery looked at her.

“No?”

“I didn't know.”
