Another pause.

“It doesn't matter that he wore a hoodie.”

Adrian looked up.

Progress, perhaps.

Vivian lowered her voice.

“No.”

“You don't get to make this about what I cost you.”

Interesting.

She walked off the aircraft without looking back.

Adrian waited until most passengers deplaned.

Calvin Pierce stopped beside him.

“You sure you want me to call?”

“Yes.”

“I don't want money.”

“I didn't say money.”

Calvin smiled.

“Good.”

Then serious:

“I've been moved before.”

Adrian’s eyes sharpened.

“On Meridian?”

“Yes.”

“How many?”

“Twice.”

“First class?”

“Once premium economy.”

“Did you complain?”

“First time.”

“What happened?”

“Got an apology email.”

“Second?”

“I let it go.”

“Why?”

Calvin shrugged.

“Because arguing in airports gets complicated for guys who look like me.”

The sentence hit.

Adrian looked at him.

“I understand.”

Calvin shook his head.

“No offense.”

“But you understand differently when people know you're chairman.”

Adrian absorbed that.

He was right.

“Yes.”

Calvin nodded.

“That's all.”

He left.

Adrian sat alone for another moment.

Then walked off.

Elena Park was waiting at the end of jet bridge.

Forty-seven.

Korean American.

Black suit.

Sneakers.

Legal folder under one arm.

No hug.

She looked at his hoodie.

“That coffee?”

“Yes.”

“Burn?”

“No.”

“Good.”

Then:

“You're trending.”

“I gathered.”

“You want numbers?”

“No.”

“Excellent.”

She turned.

“Car downstairs.”

Adrian followed.

As they walked through terminal, people recognized him from videos.

Phones lifted.

He kept moving.

Elena said quietly:

“Don't say anything.”

“I wasn't planning to.”

“Good.”

“Did you preserve ER-9?”

“Yes.”

“How bad?”

“Bad enough that I got on plane.”

Adrian stopped.

Elena rarely dramatized.

“How bad?”

She looked at him.

“Executive Recovery Nine does not officially exist.”

“I know.”

“No.”

“You don't.”

She lowered her voice.

“The code exists in departure control.”

“But policy manual doesn't.”

“So somebody had IT add functionality outside formal governance.”

“Who?”

“We're tracing.”

“Customer Experience?”
