She had changed clothes.

Jeans.

Blouse.

Small overnight bag in one hand.

Her expression was controlled.

“I assume your sister knows everything already.”

The aunt looked toward her.

“I know enough.”

The father raised one hand.

“Don’t.”

His sister stopped.

Good.

The stepmother looked toward the girl.

“We need to talk.”

The daughter moved closer to her aunt.

The stepmother noticed.

Her face tightened.

“I never hurt you.”

The father said:

“Don't put this on her.”

“I am talking to her.”

“No.”

“She is part of this family.”

“Then stop asking a nine-year-old to explain your behavior.”

The stepmother laughed bitterly.

“So now I’m dangerous?”

“I didn't say that.”

“You called your sister.”

“She wanted her here.”

The stepmother looked toward the girl.

“Of course she did.”

The girl began looking at the floor again.

The father stepped between their lines of sight.

“What’s in the bag?”

His wife stared.

“What do you think?”

“You’re leaving?”

“You asked me to.”

“I asked for twenty minutes.”

She smiled without humor.

“And during those twenty minutes you apparently decided I’m some kind of monster.”

“I decided I need space.”

“Same thing.”

The aunt said:

“No, it isn't.”

The father looked toward his sister.

“Please.”

She nodded.

The stepmother looked toward him.

“I will stay at a hotel tonight.”

“Okay.”

“Then tomorrow you and I talk without an audience.”

The father nodded.

“Yes.”

“And without her.”

She gestured slightly toward the daughter.

The father’s face hardened.

“She has a name.”

His wife stared.

“You know what I meant.”

“I do.”

That was the problem.

She walked toward the door.

Then stopped.

Turned back.

“There are always two sides.”

The father answered:

“Yes.”

She almost looked relieved.

Then he continued.

“And for months I listened mostly to yours.”

Her expression closed.

She left.

The front door shut.

His daughter exhaled.

Not a sigh.

A release.

The father heard it.

So did his sister.

The aunt looked at him.

No accusation needed.

He knew.

That night, his daughter slept in his room.

Not because she asked.

Because she fell asleep there while watching a movie and he did not want to move her.
