“Good.”

“What did they think?”

“That everybody needed better lawyers.”

Marcus laughed.

“Law students.”

“Then I asked about the actual problem.”

“And?”

“One got it.”

“What?”

“That everybody was trying to use the house to prove family.”

Marcus became quiet.

Then:

“Your mother would like that.”

Tiana smiled.

“Aisha?”

“Yes.”

It still mattered that he clarified sometimes.

Not because Vanessa had become mother.

She had not.

Because Tiana’s life contained multiple women who occupied different roles, and language deserved precision.

“What about Vanessa?”

Marcus asked.

“What about her?”

“Have you told her?”

“No.”

“She might like it.”

“Maybe.”

Their relationship had evolved into something neither predicted.

Vanessa was no longer Tiana’s stepmother legally.

But she remained Maya and Jordan’s mother.

That meant she remained present.

Graduations.

Weddings.

Birthdays.

Emergencies.

Eventually awkwardness became familiarity.

Tiana never called her Mom.

Vanessa never asked.

When Tiana married at thirty, Vanessa attended.

Not in the front row.

That belonged to Marcus, Aisha’s parents, Jordan, Maya, and Tiana’s closest family.

Vanessa sat one row behind.

She wore navy.

Simple jewelry.

No attempt to command attention.

At the reception, the photographer gathered family.

Tiana saw Vanessa step backward automatically.

“I’ll stay out.”

Tiana looked toward her.

For a second she was thirteen again.

White shirt.

Birthday balloons.

A hand on her arm.

Not this picture.

Tiana said:

“No.”

Vanessa froze.

Tiana waved her forward.

“You’re in one.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

Tiana laughed.

“Still not dramatic.”

“I’m trying.”

“Try harder.”

She joined.

The photographer raised the camera.

Marcus stood beside Tiana.

Jordan on one side.

Maya on the other.

Vanessa slightly behind them.

Aisha was absent.

And present.

The photograph did not replace anyone.

That was the lesson Vanessa had needed decades to learn.

Inclusion was not subtraction.

Love did not require emptying one chair before someone else could sit down.

Years afterward, Tiana found the birthday video hard drive while helping Marcus move into a smaller home.

He no longer needed four bedrooms.

Jordan lived in Chicago.

Maya in Raleigh.

Tiana in Atlanta.

The old family house was going on the market.

Marcus handed her a box marked:

PHOTOS / OLD TECH / PROBABLY IMPORTANT

“That label inspires confidence.”

“I did my best.”

She found the hard drive beneath cables.
