Then he looked toward Simone.
“We’ve been searching the building for you.”
Simone raised one eyebrow.
“Apparently not the front desk.”
A few guests heard.
Adrian took the hit.
“Yes.”
Fair.
Caroline looked confused.
“Why would you be searching for her?”
Adrian did not answer immediately.
Simone picked up her sunglasses from the counter.
Micah retrieved the suitcase.
Adrian looked at the boy.
Then at Caroline.
Then toward the chandelier above them.
He seemed to understand that the entire culture of his hotel had condensed into one scene.
Finally he said:
“The acquisition closed at eleven forty-seven this morning.”
Caroline stared.
“What acquisition?”
Adrian’s voice dropped.
“The ownership transfer.”
Silence.
Caroline looked toward Simone.
No recognition yet.
Only fear trying to assemble facts.
Adrian continued:
“Bellamy Hospitality Group no longer owns this property.”
Caroline’s mouth opened slightly.
“The buyer is Carter Meridian.”
Simone watched realization arrive.
First in Caroline’s eyes.
Then her mouth.
Then her posture.
Carter.
Simone Carter.
Caroline went pale.
Adrian said:
“Ms. Carter is the founder and managing partner.”
The security officer slowly lowered his radio.
One of the nearby guests whispered:
“Oh my God.”
Caroline stared at Simone.
“No.”
The word escaped without permission.
Simone looked at her.
Caroline shook her head once.
Not denial of the facts.
Denial of the social order she thought she understood.
She had already decided who Simone was.
A woman with a child.
No entourage.
A guest to redirect.
Someone she could humiliate without consequence.
Now the label had changed.
Owner.
The face was identical.
Only the information changed.
That was the entire problem.
Adrian continued:
“She does not need a reservation to enter this hotel.”
Simone’s eyes shifted toward him.
“I did today.”
He understood.
The reservation had not been a mistake.
It had been a test.
Maybe not originally designed as one.
But now it was.
Caroline looked toward the torn paper on the floor.
Her breathing became shallow.
“Ms. Carter, I…”
Simone raised one hand.
Not yet.
Caroline stopped.
Adrian said quietly:
“She’s also here to conduct the final executive review.”
Caroline looked toward him.
“What?”
Simone answered.
“I’m here to decide what we bought.”
Caroline swallowed.
Simone looked around the lobby.
“The building.”
“The contracts.”
“The debt.”
“The service culture.”
“The management systems.”
“The people.”
She looked back at Caroline.
“Especially the people.”
Micah stood beside her.
Still holding his book.
Still watching.
Simone hated that he was watching.
Not because she wanted to hide reality from him.
Because children should not have to become witnesses to every lesson adults refused to learn before they arrived.
She turned toward Adrian.
“Conference room.”
He nodded immediately.
