“I hated that.”

She placed one hand over his.

“He didn't hurt me.”

“I know.”

“He scared me.”

Elena blinked.

Marcus rarely admitted fear.

“Dad.”

“Not for you physically.”

“For what could happen once someone with authority decided facts weren't enough.”

Elena stared at him.

Marcus continued:

“That was what scared me twenty-seven years ago.”

“I kept thinking if I showed one more document, answered one more question, stayed calm one more minute, the encounter would become reasonable.”

“It never did.”

Elena looked toward her tea.

“I felt that today.”

“I know.”

“Every answer became another reason.”

Marcus nodded.

Then:

“You were calmer than I was.”

“I had your example.”

He smiled sadly.

“That is not the inheritance I wanted to give you.”

Elena looked at him.

“You also gave me stubbornness.”

“That’s useful.”

“Sometimes.”

They smiled.

Her phone buzzed.

CEO life returning.

Chief legal officer from Vance Risk.

Call urgently. County counsel reached out regarding Monday audit.

Elena sighed.

Marcus looked.

“Work?”

“Yes.”

“Cancel the contract.”

She looked over.

“Why?”

“Conflict.”

“Maybe.”

“Definitely.”

Elena considered.

Her firm auditing the sheriff’s department after she became the subject of a disputed stop created obvious problems.

Even if contract technically covered vehicle impoundment procedures, independence mattered.

She called general counsel Priya Shah.

Priya answered immediately.

“Are you okay?”

“Yes.”

“Real yes?”

Elena smiled.

“Everyone asks that.”

“Because you say yes too quickly.”

“I'm angry.”

“Better.”

Priya continued:

“We need to discuss recusal.”

“I know.”

“My recommendation is remove you entirely from the Silver Creek engagement.”

“Agreed.”

“Potentially assign outside partner.”

“Yes.”

“County may terminate.”

“That’s their right.”

“Also the gas-station video is online.”

Elena closed her eyes.

“How?”

“Customer posted it.”

“Which part?”

“Sheriff saying women like you don't legitimately own Lamborghinis.”

Elena’s eyes opened.

“He actually said that?”

She remembered the sentiment.

Not exact wording.

Adrenaline compresses memory.

Priya said:

“Clearly.”

“How bad?”

“Two hundred thousand views.”

Elena groaned.

Marcus heard.

“Internet?”

“Yes.”

He smiled.

“Your mother would have loved this.”

“She would have posted outfit details.”

Marcus laughed.

Priya continued:

“Press has identified you.”

“Of course.”

“And him.”

“Obviously.”

“Do you want a statement?”

Elena thought.

“Yes.”

“What?”

“Short.”

She dictated.

“Vance Risk Systems confirms that Elena Vance was involved in a roadside vehicle-verification encounter with Silver Creek County Sheriff Daniel Miller today.”

“Ms. Vance was traveling privately and was not conducting company business.”

“Because Vance Risk has a pending county compliance engagement, Ms. Vance will recuse herself and the company will cooperate with any independent review.”

Priya typed.

“Anything about discrimination?”

“No.”
