Daniel shook his head.
The vehicle arrived moments later.
County command pickup.
Undersheriff Robert Hale stepped out.
Sixty.
Daniel’s longtime second-in-command.
He approached quickly.
“What’s going on?”
Daniel turned.
“Who called you?”
“Dispatch.”
Daniel frowned.
“Why?”
Robert looked toward the gathering phones.
Then Marcus.
Then Elena.
Then documents in Daniel’s hand.
“Because apparently we now have three calls from civilians saying the sheriff is trying to tow a registered owner’s Lamborghini at Mountain Crest.”
Daniel’s face hardened.
Robert recognized Marcus next.
His steps slowed.
“Oh.”
Marcus nodded.
“Robert.”
They had met years ago.
Robert had been one of the deputies who later testified that Marcus had remained cooperative during the 1999 stop.
Daniel looked between them.
“Everyone needs to stop acting like an old civil case determines what I'm allowed to investigate today.”
Robert’s expression sharpened.
“It doesn't.”
“Good.”
“But today’s facts determine what you can investigate today.”
Daniel stared.
Robert turned toward Claire.
“What do we have?”
She spoke professionally.
“Valid Colorado license.”
“Valid registration in Ms. Vance’s name.”
“Insurance current.”
“Plate clean.”
“VIN matches.”
“No report of theft.”
“No observed crime.”
“Sheriff has requested a tow pending fraud verification.”
Robert looked at Daniel.
“Fraud based on?”
Daniel did not answer.
Robert’s face changed.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
The same question everyone kept asking.
The same absent answer.
“Cancel the tow.”
Daniel stared.
“You work for me.”
Robert’s voice stayed calm.
“I’m also undersheriff.”
“You don't override the elected sheriff.”
“I can refuse to participate in an unsupported seizure.”
Elena watched.
Power structure cracking.
Daniel looked around.
Claire.
Robert.
Marcus.
Elena.
Civilians filming.
Everyone had become a witness to the moment he could no longer control through title alone.
His voice rose.
“Fine.”
He grabbed the radio.
“Cancel tow.”
Dispatch replied.
“Copy.”
Then Daniel shoved the leather folder toward Elena.
She did not take it immediately.
She looked at his hand.
Then his face.
“Put it on the hood.”
He stared.
“What?”
“You have been holding my property for twenty minutes.”
“I do not want you stepping closer to me while you're angry.”
Daniel’s face changed.
The irony was brutal.
The woman he had repeatedly ordered to move slowly was now giving him a physical boundary.
Robert looked away.
Daniel placed the folder on the Lamborghini’s roof.
Elena picked it up.
Checked documents.
All present.
She slid the misconduct judgment behind the registration.
Closed the folder.
Daniel said:
“You’re free to go.”
Elena looked toward his body camera.
“At what point did the basis for detention end?”
Daniel stared.
“What?”
“I’m asking for the record.”
“When did you determine there was no longer suspicion of fraud?”
He looked toward Robert.
Bad instinct.
Robert said:
“Answer her yourself.”
Daniel’s face tightened.
