“Employment credentials and transit paperwork.”

The sheriff reached toward the portfolio.

“Hand it over.”

The driver remained calm.

“Sheriff, those documents contain restricted information. You already have my license and vehicle papers. If you need to verify my credentials, there's an authorized contact number.”

The sheriff's face reddened.

“You telling me what I can inspect?”

“No, sir. I'm explaining the proper verification procedure.”

The sheriff stepped back.

“Get out of the truck.”

The Black man looked at him.

“Is there a problem with my license?”

“I said get out.”

The younger deputy shifted nervously.

The driver studied the sheriff for a moment.

Then he nodded.

“All right.”

He opened the door.

He stepped onto the gravel.

The sheriff seemed irritated by his size.

The Black man stood several inches taller, with broad shoulders and powerful arms that filled the sleeves of his fitted shirt.

But his hands remained open at his sides.

He made no threatening movement.

The sheriff ordered him to turn around and place his hands against the truck.

The driver complied.

The sheriff searched him.

He found no weapon.

No contraband.

Nothing suspicious.

The driver stood quietly throughout.

Then the sheriff moved toward the open vehicle door.

He reached inside and grabbed the leather portfolio.

The Black man's voice changed.

“Sheriff. Don't open that sealed packet.”

The sheriff turned.

“Why? Got something to hide?”

“It's controlled material. You can verify the issuing office without opening it.”

The sheriff laughed.

“You expect me to believe you're some kind of secret agent?”

“No, sir. I expect you to follow the law.”

The deputy glanced toward the sheriff.

He knew that sentence would make the situation worse.

The sheriff's jaw tightened.

“You think you can stand on my road and lecture me?”

The Black man looked directly at him.

“This is a public highway.”

The sheriff stepped closer.

“You getting smart with me?”

“No.”

“Then shut your mouth.”

The Black man became silent.

He had learned long ago that some people interpreted calmness as defiance because they wanted an excuse to escalate.

He could feel anger rising.

But he controlled it.

The sheriff unzipped the portfolio.

He began removing papers.

The Black man watched carefully.

He recognized the document containing his official service history.

He recognized the credential letter.

He recognized the sealed access packet.

The sheriff glanced at the pages.

Then he scoffed.

“You expect me to believe all this?”

The driver replied, “You don't need to believe me. Call the issuing office.”
