“Make sure he doesn't reach the site before the meeting.”

The deputy looked toward his superior.

The sheriff immediately disconnected.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then the deputy asked, “Who was that?”

The sheriff stared through the windshield.

“County business.”

The deputy wanted to ask what kind of county business required stopping a truck before a private meeting.

But he remembered the previous warnings.

He remained silent.

They parked near a bend where the highway passed through a stretch of pine trees.

The sheriff watched northbound traffic.

A delivery van passed.

Then a sedan.

A white utility truck approached from the opposite direction.

Ten minutes later, the black Ford F-150 appeared.

The sheriff straightened.

“There he is.”

The deputy looked at the speed display.

The truck was traveling only a few miles over the posted limit.

The sheriff activated his emergency lights.

The Black driver slowed immediately.

He signaled and moved onto the gravel shoulder.

The deputy watched the controlled movement.

No sudden acceleration.

No attempt to evade.

No suspicious driving.

Just a man pulling over for a traffic stop.

The sheriff smiled.

“Let's go see who thinks he can drive through my county without permission.”

The deputy followed him out of the SUV.

The Georgia heat struck them immediately.

Gravel crunched beneath their boots.

The sheriff approached the driver's window with deliberate slowness.

He tapped the tail light.

Then he leaned toward the open window.

The Black man sat upright, both hands visible on the steering wheel.

“Good morning, Sheriff.”

The sheriff looked him up and down.

“Long way from home, aren't you?”

The driver remained calm.

“I'm traveling to a scheduled appointment.”

“Where?”

“South of here.”

The sheriff smiled unpleasantly.

“That doesn't answer my question.”

The driver kept his voice respectful.

“It's a work appointment. My destination can be verified through the appropriate office if necessary.”

The sheriff's face tightened.

“Oh, we've got a careful talker.”

The younger deputy stood several feet behind.

He watched the driver's hands.

They had not moved from the steering wheel.

The sheriff demanded identification, registration, and insurance.

The Black man explained where the documents were located before reaching for them.

He moved slowly.

He handed over his license.

Then he retrieved the registration and insurance card from the leather portfolio on the passenger seat.

As the portfolio opened, the sheriff saw the official documents inside.

His expression changed.

“What's all that?”

“Professional documents.”

“What kind?”
