His personal papers were scattered across the roadside.

And the sheriff who had humiliated him was standing only a few feet away, still insisting that he had done nothing wrong.

The senior investigator asked the deputy whether his body camera had been active.

“Yes, ma'am.”

“Since when?”

“Before we approached the vehicle.”

The sheriff's head snapped toward him.

“You had that thing on?”

The deputy looked confused.

“Department policy requires it during traffic enforcement.”

The investigator watched the exchange carefully.

“Preserve the original recording. Do not delete, alter, or overwrite it.”

The deputy nodded.

“Yes, ma'am.”

She then asked whether the patrol vehicle had recorded the stop.

The deputy confirmed that it had.

The sheriff interrupted.

“The equipment's been unreliable.”

The younger deputy looked surprised.

“It was working this morning.”

The investigator made a note.

“Then we'll arrange for lawful preservation of the relevant data.”

The sheriff clenched his jaw.

He looked toward the Black man.

“You've turned a speeding ticket into a circus.”

The Black man met his gaze.

“No, Sheriff. You did that when you set my papers on fire.”

The investigator raised one hand.

“Gentlemen, we're going to document the scene. I don't need another argument.”

The sheriff stepped toward her.

“I want to know who ordered these vehicles into my county.”

The investigator looked at him calmly.

“The visit was prompted by a missed security check-in and a request for immediate identity verification. The response was coordinated with the state communications center.”

The sheriff frowned.

“A missed check-in?”

“Yes.”

The investigator continued.

“The visitor was expected at a secured contractor site. When he did not arrive, the facility initiated its verification procedure.”

The sheriff glanced toward the Black man.

Then he looked down at the damaged portfolio.

His expression was difficult to read behind the sunglasses.

The investigator noticed.

“Sheriff, did you know his destination before stopping him?”

The question seemed to strike him unexpectedly.

“What?”

“Did you know where he was going?”

The sheriff hesitated.

“No.”

The younger deputy looked up.

The investigator watched the sheriff.

“Are you certain?”

The sheriff's face hardened.

“Of course.”

The deputy's stomach tightened.

He remembered the phone message.

Driver arriving before noon.

He remembered the call in the patrol SUV.

Make sure he doesn't reach the site before the meeting.

And he remembered the sheriff saying, There he is, before the F-150 passed their position.

The deputy looked toward the investigator.

He understood that the truth might cost him his job.
