He said quietly, “Is your body camera functioning?”
The Sheriff stared.
“What?”
“Your camera.”
A red indicator should have been visible.
It was not.
The Sheriff took another step forward.
“You worried about cameras?”
“No.”
“Then quit looking at mine.”
The younger officer remained silent but subtly shifted his gaze toward the SUV’s windshield.
A tiny recessed light near the rearview mirror glowed steadily.
Vehicle recording system active.
Front camera.
Rear camera.
Interior microphone.
Independent timestamp.
The Sheriff did not notice.
He pointed at the Black man.
“Turn around.”
“Am I under arrest?”
“Turn around.”
“On what grounds?”
There it was.
The question the Sheriff hated.
Not shouted.
Not disrespectful.
Worse.
Precise.
The Sheriff stepped closer.
“You people come through here every week thinking that government plate gives you permission to talk however you want.”
The Black man’s expression changed slightly.
Not fear.
Recognition.
“You people?”
The Sheriff heard himself.
He could have corrected.
He did not.
“People from outside my county.”
The Black man held his gaze.
“Then say what you mean carefully.”
The Sheriff’s face flushed.
“Turn around.”
The Black man did.
Not because the order was lawful.
Because escalation with an angry armed official on a highway had more possible endings than pride was worth.
The Sheriff grabbed his wrist.
Hard.
Pulled it behind his back.
The younger officer immediately spoke.
“Sheriff, he is complying.”
“Stay where you are.”
The Sheriff twisted the Black man’s arm higher.
The Black man’s jaw tightened.
“Do not injure my shoulder.”
“You giving medical advice now?”
“I’m telling you I am not resisting.”
The Sheriff shoved him toward the hood of the SUV.
His chest hit metal.
The younger officer stepped forward instinctively.
“Sheriff—”
The baton came out.
Metal snapped open with a sharp click.
The Sheriff swung it low.
Not at the younger officer’s head.
Across the outside of his thigh.
Enough to stop movement.
The younger officer staggered.
“Back!”
He lifted both hands.
The Sheriff pointed the baton.
“On your knees.”
The officer stared.
Then lowered himself.
“Hands behind your head.”
He complied.
The Black man turned slightly.
“Sheriff.”
The baton struck the SUV hood.
BANG.
“Face forward.”
The Sheriff grabbed the Black man’s shoulder and shoved again.
Then swept one leg behind him.
The Black man went down onto one knee.
The Sheriff pushed.
He hit the asphalt with both palms.
Pain shot through his right wrist.
Before he could reposition, the Sheriff placed one boot near his hip and pressed the baton across the upper back of his shoulder.
The Black man exhaled slowly.
