"Lie."

"Anna knew."

"How?"

"She asked if I would go back if you appeared."

Clare barely breathed.

"What did you say?"

Dean looked toward Evan.

"At the time?"

"Yes."

"No."

Clare absorbed it.

Dean continued.

"I meant it."

"I loved Anna."

"I built a life."

"I wasn't waiting."

Clare nodded.

"I understand."

"But after she died..."

He paused.

Clare did not rush him.

"I started remembering you more."

"Why?"

"Because grief opens drawers you thought were empty."

Her eyes filled.

Dean looked at her.

"I hated that."

"Because?"

"It felt disloyal."

"Was it?"

"I don't think so now."

Clare reached across the table.

Her fingers touched his.

Dean let them.

She whispered:

"What do you think it was?"

He turned his hand beneath hers.

"Maybe my mind reminding me I'd survived losing someone before."

Clare almost pulled back.

Not because she was hurt.

Because she understood.

Dean continued.

"I survived you."

"Then I survived Anna."

"Different losses."

"Different kinds."

"But I did."

Clare tightened her fingers.

"Dean."

"Yeah?"

"I'm sorry I left the way I did."

He met her eyes.

"I know."

"No."

"Let me say it properly."

She breathed.

"I loved you."

"I was afraid that loving you would make me choose a smaller life."

"So I made the choice for both of us."

"I called that freedom."

"It wasn't."

"It was fear."

Dean listened.

"I don't regret London."

"I don't regret my career."

"I regret believing I had to lose you to have them."

Dean swallowed.

Clare continued.

"And if we do anything now..."

He looked at her.

"I don't want it to be because we think we owe our younger selves a happy ending."

Dean nodded slowly.

"Good."

"I want it because we choose each other now."

His fingers tightened around hers.

"Now is complicated."

"I know."

"Evan."

"I know."

"Anna."

"I know."

"My life isn't glamorous."

Clare smiled.

"I spent this morning sitting in road water."

"Five minutes."

"Traumatic."

He laughed.

She moved her chair slightly closer.

"Complicated doesn't scare me anymore."

Dean looked at her.

"What does?"

She answered immediately.

"Leaving again."

The honesty nearly undid him.

Dean leaned forward.

Clare did too.

Their faces were inches apart.

Then Evan stirred.

"Dad?"

Dean closed his eyes.

Clare started laughing silently.

Evan sat up.

"Can we go?"

Dean leaned back.

"Yes."

Clare kissed his cheek before he stood.

A simple kiss.

It burned for the entire drive home.

The next four days were not a reunion.

Not officially.

They were meetings disguised as coincidence.

Dean repaired Clare's steering seal at a local shop.

She paid him despite argument.

He took Evan to see the development site Clare was managing.

She showed them old brick mills being converted into housing and public space.

Dean told her the parking plan was terrible.

She informed him professionals designed it.

He asked whether professionals had ever driven trucks.

She changed the plan two weeks later and never admitted why.

They ate lunch.
