The waitress’s manager began walking toward them.
The French investor did not flinch.
“Was my counsel notified?”
The general counsel shook his head.
The businessman said:
“He is mischaracterizing.”
The counsel continued:
“I advised that the French and English summaries had to be reconciled before signature.”
The businessman’s face went red.
“You work for me.”
The counsel looked toward him.
“No.”
Pause.
“I work for the company.”
There it was.
A fracture.
The French investor slowly closed his pen.
The sound was tiny.
It ended the deal more effectively than any speech.
The businessman heard it.
His expression changed.
“Don’t overreact.”
The investor looked toward him.
“You told me the transfer ended in ninety days.”
“It does operationally.”
“You told me voting rights returned automatically.”
“They—”
“No.”
The investor pointed toward the page.
“This says they do not.”
The businessman leaned forward.
“We can amend language tonight.”
The investor stared.
“You are still pretending this is drafting.”
The French attorney had found the corporate schedule now.
She held it up.
“This beneficiary company was formed six weeks ago.”
The businessman did not answer.
She continued.
“Who owns it?”
Silence.
The general counsel spoke again.
“Indirectly?”
His voice was low.
“The managing member is controlled by him.”
The waitress felt the entire room shift.
Not metaphorically.
People physically moved away from the businessman.
The younger American executive pulled his chair back slightly.
The second executive stared at the general counsel.
The French investor’s face went completely still.
The businessman turned toward his lawyer.
“You’re finished.”
The counsel almost smiled.
“Probably.”
The restaurant manager arrived.
“Is everything all right?”
The businessman pointed toward the waitress.
“No.”
“She has disrupted a private transaction.”
The waitress’s stomach dropped.
There it was.
Power returning to the most familiar available target.
The manager looked toward her.
Then toward the table.
The businessman continued.
“She read confidential documents without authorization.”
The waitress opened her mouth.
The French investor spoke first.
“She did not take anything.”
The businessman snapped:
“You were not watching her all night.”
