“I still think the car is too flashy.”

Marcus almost smiled.

“That’s your opinion.”

“I know.”

He waited.

She looked uncomfortable, as though the words she intended to say had become more difficult now that she had to say them directly.

“I may have handled the situation poorly.”

Marcus regarded her carefully.

“May have?”

Her cheeks colored.

“I handled it poorly.”

He nodded once.

“Thank you for saying that.”

She looked down.

“I was trying to maintain standards. I thought you were being disrespectful.”

“I asked you to identify a rule.”

“You did.”

“And I asked you not to threaten my property.”

She pressed her lips together.

“I shouldn’t have said I would have you removed.”

“No.”

“I also shouldn’t have said what I said about ‘you people.’”

Marcus’s expression became more serious.

“No. You shouldn’t have.”

She looked up at him.

“I was angry.”

“I understand that you were angry. But anger doesn’t excuse the words.”

Denise nodded slowly.

“I know.”

For the first time, she seemed less concerned with defending herself than with acknowledging what had happened.

“I’m sorry,” she said.

Marcus studied her face.

The apology was not elaborate. It did not explain away the incident or ask him to forget it. It was, at least, an apology.

“Thank you,” he said. “I accept.”

Denise exhaled.

“I hope we can move on.”

“We can. But moving on means treating the next resident fairly, too.”

She nodded.

“I’ll try.”

Marcus offered his hand.

She hesitated, then shook it.

The handshake was brief and awkward, but it was a beginning.

In the weeks that followed, Cedar Ridge settled into a new rhythm.

The board published its rules, created a clear process for complaints, and began holding open office hours for residents. Mrs. Alvarez volunteered to help organize the annual neighborhood picnic. Tyler and his father joined a small committee to improve the walking path around the pond. The Carsons hosted a summer cookout and invited Marcus, who brought a large bowl of potato salad.

The Mustang remained parked in the driveway.
