“This isn't enough to accuse her.”

“I know.”

“But enough for me to be interested.”

Marcus looked toward the backyard.

“What can we do?”

Elena asked whether he consented to a temporary evidence camera installed where it could capture the pool and side gate while avoiding neighboring private areas.

“Yes.”

“Immediately.”

She smiled slightly.

“That's usually the answer after someone has a family.”

The device went up discreetly beneath the rear roofline.

Small.

Neutral.

Easy to overlook.

Marcus told no one outside Danielle and Maya.

The family stopped swimming.

That was hardest on the children.

Nia complained daily.

Caleb asked every morning if the pool was safe yet.

Marcus hated telling them no.

Brenda sent a third notice claiming the association might seek a mandatory sanitation inspection.

Marcus forwarded it to Maya and did nothing else.

Three days later, at 8:12 on a clear Wednesday morning, Marcus walked downstairs wearing a white bathrobe and slippers.

He had showered.

Danielle had already left for work.

The children were at summer day camp.

Marcus planned coffee, breakfast, and a remote meeting at ten.

He reached the kitchen.

Stopped.

The side gate moved.

Marcus stared through the glass.

A blonde woman slipped inside.

Bright green swimsuit.

White cover-up tied loosely around her waist.

Oversized sunglasses.

Large cream HOA tote.

Brenda.

Marcus set down his mug.

Slowly.

Every instinct in his body told him to open the door.

Demand an explanation.

Get her off the property.

Then he saw the container in her bag.

His heart rate changed.

Brenda looked around.

She moved toward the pool.

Marcus pulled out his phone and began recording.

She crouched beside the deep end.

Opened the tote.

Removed a plain container.

Unscrewed the lid.

Marcus's jaw clenched so hard his teeth hurt.

She poured a stream of concentrated liquid into the water.

No hesitation.

No testing.

No measuring.

No mistake.

The liquid dispersed into the blue surface.

Marcus felt rage move through his chest.

His children had been in that water.

His wife.

He nearly opened the patio door.

Then remembered Elena.

Evidence.

He forced himself to remain still.

Brenda finished pouring.

Put the container back in the tote.

Then took out her phone.

Photographed the water.

Marcus whispered to himself.

“Unbelievable.”

Brenda moved to another angle.

More photographs.

Then opened a note on her phone.

Typed.

Marcus's anger became colder.

This was planned.

She turned toward the gate.

Marcus opened the patio door.

Brenda froze.

He stepped outside.

White bathrobe.

Barely controlled fury.

“Morning, Brenda.”

Her face changed.

Then hardened.

“What are you doing home?”

Marcus almost laughed.

“Incredible question.”

She adjusted the tote higher on her shoulder.

“I was conducting an emergency inspection.”

“In a swimsuit.”

“The pool was the subject of the inspection.”

“You poured something into it.”

“No.”

Marcus stared.

Brenda stepped toward the gate.
