“You were relieved.”
“Obviously.”
“You never say that.”
He frowned.
“What do I say?”
“That you knew it would ring.”
“I did.”
“That sounds different.”
He leaned back.
She was right.
The public version made him sound calm because he had expected backup.
The private truth was simpler.
He had been afraid.
Not panicked.
Not out of control.
But afraid.
The phone ringing meant his people knew where he was.
It meant the chief could no longer define reality alone.
That mattered.
His granddaughter paused the recording again.
“Were you scared?”
The retired agent looked toward her.
“You know I was tied to a chair.”
“That’s not an answer.”
He smiled faintly.
“You sound like your mother.”
“Also not an answer.”
He looked down at his hands.
Age had changed them.
Veins.
Spots.
A slight tremor in the right thumb.
Once, rope had compressed those wrists.
Now time did more than rope ever had.
“Yes.”
he said.
“I was scared.”
His granddaughter nodded.
“Thank you.”
He looked toward her.
“For what?”
“For not making bravery stupid.”
He laughed.
“That’s not a sentence.”
“It is now.”
She explained.
Growing up, she had heard stories about him.
The federal agent who stayed calm.
The man who warned the chief.
The investigator who did not panic.
The supervisor who insisted on precision.
All true.
But when courage became too clean, it became unusable.
Children listened and thought brave people did not feel what they felt.
Fear.
Uncertainty.
Anger.
He understood.
He had done the same thing with older agents when he was young.
Turned them into finished people.
Nobody was finished.
His granddaughter placed the recorder beside him.
“Keep it.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because you brought it.”
“That doesn’t mean I want it.”
He looked at the label.
DON’T USE WITHOUT PERMISSION
He smiled.
“Your great-uncle would’ve hated that we listened.”
“Your supervisor?”
“Yes.”
“Is he dead?”
“Yes.”
“Then permission process is complicated.”
The retired agent laughed.
“Terrible ethics.”
“Runs in family.”
She left the recorder.
He did not listen again for three weeks.
Then one night, unable to sleep, he played the full interview.
