She stared.

“Don't.”

He stopped.

“You found it.”

“What?”

“The credential.”

Her hand tightened around the wallet.

“How long have you known?”

Daniel looked down.

“Since the beginning.”

Mara's eyes filled with disbelief.

“Why?”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“You lied to me.”

“Yes.”

“You lied about Baltimore.”

“Yes.”

“You lied about Atlas.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

She stepped closer.

“Were you there?”

“Yes.”

“Were you with me?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know me?”

“Yes.”

“Did I know you?”

Daniel looked at her.

“You loved me.”

Mara stopped.

The words hurt more than anger.

“What happened?”

Daniel's face broke.

“I betrayed you.”

Rain ran down his face.

Mara watched him.

“How?”

“I gave someone access.”

“Who?”

“Victor Hale.”

The name hit immediately.

Mara remembered the man arrested with Gregory Pierce.

The man who had told her that she had no idea what Atlas remembered.

“You worked with Victor.”

Daniel nodded.

“But I didn't know what he was doing.”

“You knew enough.”

“Yes.”

“Did you know he wanted Atlas?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Daniel looked toward the black sedan.

“Because Atlas witnessed something.”

“What?”

“A murder.”

Mara went still.

“Whose?”

Daniel swallowed.

“Yours.”

The world seemed to stop.

Mara stared at him.

“That isn't possible.”

“It happened.”

“You're saying I died?”

“No.”

“You said Atlas witnessed my murder.”

“He witnessed an attempt.”

Mara looked confused.

Daniel continued.

“You were shot.”

She touched her chest instinctively.

“You were bleeding,” he said. “Atlas stayed beside you.”

Mara's breathing became shallow.

“You were unconscious.”

“How long?”

“Four minutes.”

“And you?”

“I was there.”

“What did you do?”

“I tried to stop the bleeding.”

“Did I survive?”

“Yes.”

“Then why don't I remember?”

Daniel looked at Vance.

“Because we made sure you didn't.”

Mara turned toward Vance.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

She looked back at Daniel.

“You both decided what I was allowed to remember.”

Daniel's voice broke.

“You asked us to.”

Mara shook her head.

“I don't believe you.”

“You don't have to.”

He reached into his coat.

Mara immediately stepped back.

Daniel stopped.

Slowly, he pulled out a photograph.

He held it out.

Mara took it.
