Then whispered, "She never hit me before today."
Richard nodded.
"But there were other things."
"Yes."
"Things that hurt."
Maya's eyes filled.
She nodded.
He waited.
Finally, she whispered, "Whenever I tried to tell you, you said Nicole was doing her best."
Richard closed his eyes.
She continued.
"You told me she loved us."
A tear slipped down her cheek.
"And I thought if I couldn't feel that love, maybe something was wrong with me."
Richard's face crumpled.
He reached toward her hand.
Then stopped.
"May I?"
Maya hesitated.
After a moment, she nodded.
He covered her fingers with his.
"There's nothing wrong with you for being hurt."
She began crying.
Richard continued quietly.
"I should have listened. I should have asked questions. I should have noticed when you stopped coming to me."
His voice broke.
"I can't give you back those years."
Maya looked up.
He swallowed.
"But I can stop pretending I didn't have a responsibility to protect you."
For a long time, they sat together.
Then Ethan asked, "Does this mean we can put Mom's pictures back?"
Richard turned toward him.
His eyes filled again.
"Yes."
Ethan looked toward Maya.
Then back at his father.
"All of them?"
Richard nodded.
"All the ones you want."
The boy's face softened.
He took a small breath.
Then whispered, "I miss her."
Richard opened his arms.
Ethan moved into them.
Maya joined a moment later.
And for the first time in years, the three of them cried together without anyone telling them that grief was unhealthy, inconvenient, or disrespectful to the woman who had replaced Laura.
The police arrived shortly after five.
Richard had called the nonemergency number and explained that his adult daughter had been struck by a family member, that the alleged aggressor had left, and that he wanted the incident documented.
Two officers came to the house.
One spoke with Maya privately.
The other asked Richard and Ethan to describe what they witnessed.
Richard made it clear that Ethan was not to be pressured into repeating anything beyond what was necessary. The boy had already been frightened, and Richard wanted any further questions handled appropriately.
Maya described the slap.
The pregnancy test.
Nicole's accusations.
The shove.
And the moment Ethan entered with Laura's letter.
She showed the officer the red mark on her cheek.
Richard had photographed it with her permission.
The officer took notes, explained the next procedural steps, and provided information about reporting options and victim support services.
Nobody promised that a single report would resolve the family's problems.
But the incident was recorded.
Nicole would no longer be able to insist that the confrontation had never happened.
When the officers left, Richard stood at the front door for several minutes.
