He had never heard what she was thinking during those final hours.
Daniel spoke carefully.
"You don't have to listen immediately."
Richard swallowed.
"What does she say?"
"Mostly about the documents."
A pause.
"And something personal."
Richard looked toward Laura's photograph.
Then nodded.
"I want to hear it."
They arranged a meeting.
Richard invited Maya to attend if she wished.
She agreed.
Ethan was given a choice appropriate to his age, with support from his counselor, and decided he wanted to hear the recording later after Richard listened first.
So one Saturday afternoon, Richard and Maya sat together in Daniel's office.
The investigator placed a small audio file on his computer.
He looked toward them.
"Ready?"
Richard took his daughter's hand.
She nodded.
"Yes."
Daniel pressed play.
For a moment, there was only faint background noise.
Then Laura's voice filled the room.
"Daniel, it's Laura."
Richard stopped breathing.
It was her.
Not a memory.
Not an imagined sound.
Her actual voice.
Warm.
Slightly breathless.
Familiar in a way that seemed to reach directly into his chest.
She continued.
"I'm heading toward Millbrook. Nicole says Richard's waiting there."
A brief pause.
"I hope she's right."
Richard lowered his head.
Laura continued.
"I know he's angry with me. I know this has all become a mess."
Her voice softened.
"But I love him."
Maya began crying silently.
Laura took another breath.
"I don't want to destroy what we built. I just can't let those families keep living in unsafe homes while someone takes their money."
Richard's face crumpled.
She continued.
"If anything changes, please keep the documents safe."
A faint sound passed in the background.
Perhaps a car door.
Perhaps traffic.
Then Laura said something that made Richard feel as though time had stopped.
"And Daniel?"
The investigator's recorded voicemail continued.
"If you speak to Richard before I do, tell him I'm not trying to win an argument."
Her voice trembled slightly.
"I'm trying to come home to him with the truth."
The recording ended.
For a long time, nobody spoke.
Richard sat motionless.
His eyes remained fixed on the computer.
Then he began crying.
Not quietly.
Not with the controlled grief he had learned to display in public.
He bent forward, covered his face, and sobbed.
Maya moved closer.
She wrapped her arms around him.
Richard held her tightly.
For six years, he had believed Laura died while their marriage was breaking apart.
Now he had heard her voice explaining that she was trying to save it.
He could not change his final words to her.
Could not return to the evening when she stood beside the dining table asking him to listen.
But he finally knew what she had wanted.
