The room fell silent.
Maya stopped breathing.
Nicole stared at the boy.
"What?"
Ethan's eyes filled.
"I saw you put it in her backpack."
For a moment, Nicole looked as though she might laugh.
Then she noticed the envelope in his hand.
All the color drained from her face.
"Where did you get that?"
Ethan instinctively stepped backward.
Maya followed his gaze.
She saw the envelope.
Old.
Yellowed.
Its edges slightly bent.
Across the front, in familiar cursive handwriting, were two words.
For Richard.
Maya's heart began pounding.
She knew that handwriting.
She had seen it on birthday cards.
Recipes.
Letters from school.
And the little notes her mother tucked into lunch boxes.
"Where did you find that?" Maya whispered.
Ethan looked toward her.
"In Nicole's drawer."
Nicole lunged.
"Give me that!"
The boy jerked backward.
Her fingers caught his sleeve.
Maya moved immediately.
"Don't touch him!"
Nicole shoved Maya aside.
But Ethan twisted free and ran toward the kitchen.
"DAD!"
The word echoed through the house.
Nicole froze.
For the first time that afternoon, real fear crossed her face.
A man's voice answered from the hallway.
"Ethan?"
Richard Bennett appeared in the kitchen doorway.
He was forty-eight years old, tall, broad-shouldered, with short dark hair beginning to gray at the temples and the exhausted expression of a man who had spent too many years carrying responsibilities he no longer knew how to put down.
He wore a pale-blue business shirt with the sleeves rolled to his forearms and dark trousers.
His briefcase hung from one hand.
He had come home nearly two hours early after a construction meeting was canceled.
And he had heard his son scream.
Richard stopped.
His gaze moved across the room.
Maya stood beside the table, holding her swollen cheek.
Nicole was breathing hard.
Ethan looked terrified.
And a pregnancy test lay beside the coffee mug.
Richard slowly lowered his briefcase.
"What happened?"
Nicole recovered first.
"Richard, thank goodness."
She hurried toward him.
"Your daughter has been lying to us."
Richard barely looked at her.
His eyes remained on Maya.
"Sweetheart?"
Maya swallowed.
He took one step closer.
"What happened to your face?"
She tried to answer.
Nothing came out.
Richard looked toward Nicole.
His expression changed.
"Did you hit her?"
Nicole froze.
"Richard, you have to understand—"
"Did you hit my daughter?"
His voice was low.
Controlled.
And suddenly much more frightening than shouting.
Nicole lifted her chin.
"She was completely out of control."
Richard stared.
Maya whispered, "Dad."
He turned.
She shook her head.
"It's not true."
He looked at the pregnancy test.
Then back at her.
She continued.
"Whatever she told you, it's not true."
Richard stepped toward his daughter.
His expression softened.
"Okay."
Maya blinked.
He reached toward her face.
