Simone had been counting.

Of course she had.

Caroline said:

“I had a passenger who was not on the manifest.”

“No.”

“You had somebody presenting a delivery packet you did not understand.”

“That is different.”

Caroline looked toward Graham.

He appeared uncomfortable.

Simone noticed.

Good.

Discomfort was information.

Graham said:

“There may have been a briefing failure.”

Simone turned.

“Captain.”

“Yes?”

“Was there?”

He hesitated.

Then:

“Yes.”

“Explain.”

He looked at Caroline.

Then Claire.

Then Simone.

“Our crew received notice yesterday that the aircraft was transferring ownership today.”

“Good.”

“We were told the incoming ownership team would complete an operational review before departure.”

“Also good.”

“We were not told every name.”

“Why not?”

“Confidentiality request.”

Simone nodded.

She had approved that.

“Were you told the owner might arrive without the executive group?”

“No.”

“Were you told the review had already begun?”

Graham’s expression changed.

“No.”

Simone smiled faintly.

“It had.”

Caroline stared.

Claire went very still.

Simone continued.

“It began when I walked onto this ramp.”

The captain exhaled.

Caroline’s face hardened defensively.

“So this was a setup?”

“No.”

Simone looked at her.

“A setup requires me to create the conditions.”

“I created nothing except arriving at my aircraft.”

Caroline looked away.

Simone continued:

“You created the rest.”

The second black SUV stopped.

Three people emerged.

A Black man in a charcoal suit.

A white woman carrying a tablet.

An Asian American man in a navy suit.

Caroline watched them approach.

Simone knew each.

Adrian Cole, general counsel.

Melissa Hart, chief operating officer.

David Lin, head of aviation services.

The incoming leadership team.

They were not supposed to arrive for another five minutes.

Close enough.

Caroline looked increasingly pale.

The scene now contained exactly the visual evidence her mind had wanted from the start.

Suits.

Executives.

Authority.

Simone wondered whether that embarrassed Caroline more than her own behavior.

David reached them first.

“Simone.”

He looked from her to Graham.

Then Caroline.

“What happened?”

Simone said:

“I was denied boarding.”

Melissa stopped.

Adrian’s expression became unreadable.

David looked at Caroline.

“Why?”

Caroline’s lips parted.

Before she answered, Simone said:

“She didn’t believe I owned the plane.”

David looked at Simone’s clothes.
