Wexler laughed.

“You giving me orders now?”

“I’m making a preservation request.”

“Who exactly do you think you are?”

Adrien held his gaze.

“The person who will eventually ask for all of it.”

Something in the sentence caused Jonah to look toward the entrance road.

A sound had begun beyond the gate.

Low engines.

Several.

The crowd turned.

Three dark official vehicles passed through the security checkpoint.

They did not stop at visitor parking.

They came directly toward the pier.

Preston frowned.

“What is this?”

The vehicles stopped.

Doors opened.

Twelve uniformed personnel stepped onto the pavement.

At their front was Lieutenant Commander Mason Hale.

Mason saw the crowd first.

Then the police officers.

Then the man on his knees.

He stopped walking.

Everything in his posture changed.

The people behind him stopped too.

Mason crossed the pavement quickly.

Dunn shifted.

“Sir, stay back.”

Mason ignored him.

He stopped five feet from Adrien.

For one second he looked at the torn knee.

The cuffs.

The hand on Adrien’s shoulder.

Then he straightened.

His hand rose sharply in salute.

Behind him, twelve people did the same.

The marina became silent.

“Commander Cole.”

Preston’s phone shook.

Dunn looked at the credential still in Jonah’s hand.

Jonah looked down at the name.

ADRIEN COLE.

He swallowed.

Mason lowered his hand.

“Sir, what happened?”

Adrien remained kneeling.

“Nothing that requires escalation.”

Mason looked at Dunn.

“He’s handcuffed.”

“I noticed.”

Captain Wexler stepped forward.

“This is a local police matter.”

Mason turned.

“With respect, Captain, you appear to have restrained the lead officer responsible for today’s federal security evaluation.”

Wexler’s expression changed.

Preston whispered, “What?”

Nobody answered him.

Mason looked at Adrien.

“Do you want us to intervene?”

“No.”

The answer came immediately.

Mason understood.

Adrien looked at Wexler.

“Captain, you have two lawful options. State the basis for arrest and continue according to procedure, or release me.”

Wexler’s confidence was draining by the second.

“This man was reported as trespassing.”

“My entry was electronically authenticated.”

“He refused identification.”

Jonah spoke.

“No, Captain.”

Everyone looked at him.

Jonah held up the card.

“He asked us to verify it at least three times.”

Wexler glared at him.

Jonah did not look away.

Preston stepped forward.

“This is ridiculous. Anybody could have misunderstood—”

Adrien turned toward him.

“You said I was impersonating an official.”

“You were acting suspicious.”

“I was inspecting Gate Seven.”

The words hit Preston harder than anything else had.

His face changed.

Adrien saw it.

So did Mason.

“What about Gate Seven?” Preston asked.

Adrien watched him carefully.

“I didn’t say there was a problem.”

Preston froze.

Adrien continued.

“You assumed there was.”
