He opened his father’s notebook.

Showed the calculation.

The owner leaned closer.

The bearded worker looked over his shoulder.

The boy said:

“Almost nine bushels per acre.”

The men stared.

Then the bearded worker laughed.

Not cruelly this time.

Disbelieving.

“Come on.”

The farm owner frowned.

“That machine would paint the field yellow at nine bushels.”

“It is.”

The boy pointed toward the residue.

“Look closer.”

The owner turned.

From standing height, the kernels disappeared among chopped stalks and husks.

The boy knelt.

Pulled residue aside.

Yellow.

Everywhere.

The owner stopped.

He walked ten feet.

Knelt.

Moved stalks.

More kernels.

Another spot.

More.

The laughter ended.

The combine kept moving in the distance.

The boy looked toward it.

“If that number is even close…”

The farmer stood.

The field was eight hundred forty acres.

Not all would necessarily lose at the same rate.

But if it did—

The farmer’s face tightened.

He grabbed his radio.

“Shut her down.”

The combine operator answered immediately.

“What?”

“Shut it down.”

“Why?”

“Just shut it down.”

The massive machine slowed.

The header lifted.

Engine dropped to idle.

The farm owner looked toward the boy.

“What do you think?”

The boy’s confidence disappeared as soon as the question became real.

He had numbers.

Not diagnosis.

“I don’t know.”

One worker smiled sarcastically.

“Thought you knew everything five minutes ago.”

The owner turned toward him.

“Enough.”

The worker became quiet.

The boy continued:

“Dad would start with the sieve.”

“Why?”

“Loss is asymmetric.”

The owner looked toward the machine.

“Could be loading.”

“Yes.”

“Broken shoe?”

“Maybe.”

“Fan distribution?”

“Could be.”

The boy hated saying maybe repeatedly.

The owner did not.

Because now they were talking like mechanics.

Questions.

Not performance.

The owner called his machinery technician.

Twenty-five minutes away.

The combine operator climbed down.

He looked annoyed.

“What happened?”

The bearded worker pointed toward the boy.

“Professor says you’re throwing nine bushels.”

The operator stared at him.

The boy’s face reddened.

“I didn’t say you were doing it.”
