Lara wore a dark blue dress she had sewn herself.

Her hair was arranged carefully.

The simple gold ring shone on her finger.

Elias stood beside her.

As they entered the courthouse, several townspeople turned.

Some recognized the woman who had once been laughed off the railroad platform.

Now they watched her walk beside the rancher with her head held high.

Caleb sat with his attorney.

Thomas was also present.

He avoided Lara's eyes.

The hearing lasted most of the day.

Witnesses described the forged letters.

The payment arrangement.

The threats.

The attempts to pressure Elias into selling his river pasture.

Caleb denied wrongdoing.

Thomas tried to minimize his involvement.

Then Lara was called to speak.

She stood.

Her hands trembled slightly.

But her voice remained clear.

“I traveled to Dakota Territory because I believed a man wanted to marry me.”

The room was silent.

“I believed those letters were genuine.”

She looked toward Caleb.

“I didn't know I had been sent as a joke.”

Several people lowered their eyes.

“I was humiliated in front of strangers. I was frightened. I had very little money. And I believed I had nowhere to go.”

She turned toward Elias.

“This man had no obligation to help me.”

Elias watched her.

“But he did.”

Her voice strengthened.

“And because he did, I discovered something.”

The judge leaned forward.

“What was that, Miss Higgins?”

“That a person's worth cannot be measured by whether someone cruel finds them useful.”

The room remained silent.

She continued.

“Mr. Ryland assumed I would weaken Whispering Pines.”

She smiled faintly.

“He never bothered to ask what I could do.”

Several spectators shifted.

“Mr. Ryland wanted to take this ranch by turning me into a burden.”

She looked directly at Caleb.

“But I was never his burden to deliver.”

Elias's eyes filled.

The judge studied the documents.

By the end of the hearing, the disputed marriage arrangement was recognized as fraudulent, and Caleb's claims arising from it failed. The documented scheme also provided grounds for further civil action.

The river remained part of Whispering Pines.

Caleb had not won.

Thomas faced the consequences of his participation in the fraud.

And Lara walked out of the courthouse with Elias's hand in hers.

Outside, the same street where she had once been laughed at was crowded with people.

An older ranch hand raised his hat.

“Miss Lara!”

She turned.

He grinned.

“Best meal in Deadwood is still waiting at your place?”
