“I tried to give her food.”

He turned.

The child in pink swallowed.

“Mommy said not to.”

The man stared.

His stepdaughter continued.

“She gets hungry, Daddy.”

The neglected girl lowered her head.

The father reached for her hand.

Then stopped.

“May I?”

She hesitated.

After a moment, she nodded.

He gently took her fingers.

“Sweetheart, this is not your fault.”

Her lips trembled.

He continued.

“You did nothing wrong by being hungry.”

The girl began crying.

He swallowed.

“And you did nothing wrong by needing shoes, clothes, or help.”

She looked at him.

For a moment, she seemed to want to believe him.

But belief did not arrive immediately.

She had spent too long learning the opposite.

The father understood something then.

He could not repair what happened with a single apology.

He could not purchase enough presents to erase two years of neglect.

And he could not simply promise that everything would be fine.

He needed to act.

He looked toward the household manager standing nearby.

“Please have someone bring food for both girls.”

The woman nodded.

He continued.

“And call the children's doctor. I want an assessment as soon as possible.”

The manager's expression became serious.

“Of course.”

He looked toward the damaged sneaker.

Then toward the letter.

Finally, he asked, “How did you find your mother's papers?”

The girl looked down.

“I was cleaning.”

He waited.

“I found them behind the cabinet.”

The father swallowed.

“Why did you hide them?”

The child began trembling.

He immediately softened his voice.

“You're not in trouble.”

She looked up.

He repeated.

“You're not.”

For several moments, she struggled to speak.

Then whispered, “She said she'd throw away everything Mom left me.”

The father went still.

The girl continued.

“So I put the letter in my shoe.”

His face crumpled.

She looked down.

“I thought nobody would look there.”

A tear fell onto his hand.

Then another.

He slowly drew his daughter toward him, giving her time to pull away.

She did not.

Instead, she stepped into his arms.

For one moment, her body remained stiff.

Then she began sobbing.

The father held her.

He felt how thin she had become.

Felt her small shoulders shaking.

Felt her fingers clutching the back of his suit jacket.

And understood that while he had been attending meetings, approving contracts, and building wealth, his little girl had been hiding her dead mother's final words inside a broken shoe.

He closed his eyes.

Then whispered, “I'm here.”

The child cried harder.

For the first time that afternoon, he understood that she had needed to hear those words long before now.

But he also understood that saying them was no longer enough.

He would have to prove them.

The food arrived twenty minutes later.

The household manager carried a tray into the small sitting room beside the kitchen.

There were chicken sandwiches, sliced fruit, a bowl of warm soup, and two glasses of water.

The neglected girl stared at the tray.
