For several seconds, she did not move.
Her father sat beside her on the couch.
He had removed his suit jacket and loosened his tie.
His phone rested face down on the coffee table.
For the first time that day, he seemed determined not to let anything distract him.
“You can eat, sweetheart.”
The girl glanced toward the doorway.
He noticed.
“Your stepmother isn't coming in here.”
She looked uncertain.
He continued gently.
“And you don't need permission to eat when you're hungry.”
The birthday girl sat opposite them, still wearing her pink princess dress.
Her tiara had slipped slightly to one side.
She watched her stepsister carefully.
The neglected girl reached for half a sandwich.
Then hesitated.
“Can I have the whole one?”
Her father's face crumpled.
He nodded.
“Yes.”
She looked toward the fruit.
“And some strawberries?”
“Of course.”
She swallowed.
“Will I get in trouble?”
The father shook his head.
“No.”
She studied his expression.
For a moment, she seemed to be looking for evidence that he was pretending.
Then she slowly began eating.
He watched her take small bites.
She ate cautiously, as though she expected someone to take the plate away.
After several minutes, her shoulders began relaxing.
The father looked toward the household manager.
“Has she been eating meals with everyone?”
The woman hesitated.
She had worked in the house for less than six months.
Most days, the stepmother gave her instructions before the father returned.
The manager swallowed.
“Sir, I was told the girls had different meal schedules.”
The father looked at her.
“What does that mean?”
“She said your daughter needed to complete responsibilities before dinner.”
He stared.
The woman looked uncomfortable.
“Sometimes I left food for her, but I don't know whether she received it.”
The father nodded slowly.
He did not accuse the manager of knowing things she might not have witnessed.
But the answer confirmed something he feared.
The household routines had been organized to keep his daughter separated.
He looked toward the child.
She was eating a strawberry.
A little red juice touched her finger.
For a moment, he remembered her as a toddler sitting beside her mother, reaching for strawberries before breakfast was ready.
The memory nearly undid him.
He took a breath.
Then looked toward the birthday girl.
“Sweetheart, are you okay?”
The child in pink lowered her eyes.
She shook her head.
The man moved closer.
“Tell me.”
Her lips trembled.
“I didn't want the big party.”
He stared.
“What?”
She looked toward the doorway.
“Mommy said I had to be happy because you worked hard for it.”
The father felt a strange chill.
The girl continued.
“I wanted a little party with my friends.”
She swallowed.
“And I wanted my sister there.”
The neglected girl looked up.
For several moments, the two children stared at one another.
Then the birthday girl whispered, “I'm sorry.”
The girl in the dirty dress shook her head.
“You didn't do it.”
Her stepsister began crying.
