"My grandmother spent twenty years looking for him."

His voice broke.

"Twenty years."

Clara covered her mouth.

Daniel looked at Edgar.

"She died believing he abandoned her."

The old man whispered, "I'm sorry."

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"You're sorry?"

Samuel stood.

"Daniel."

But Daniel was already stepping toward Edgar.

"My father grew up thinking his own father had walked away from him. My grandmother worked herself into an early grave. And all that time..."

He gestured toward the chamber.

"All that time, he was here."

Edgar began trembling.

Samuel moved between them.

"Don't."

Daniel's eyes filled.

"He deserves—"

"He deserves to answer for what he did."

Samuel's voice was firm.

"But not here. Not like this."

Daniel stared at him.

Then slowly lowered the rifle.

Clara exhaled.

For a moment, the danger seemed to pass.

But one question remained.

Samuel turned toward Edgar.

"What happened to Thomas Whitcomb?"

The old man looked at the sealed wall.

Then whispered, "He disappeared."

The confession changed everything.

According to Edgar, Thomas Whitcomb vanished from the underground chamber during a thunderstorm in the autumn of 1871.

By then, Samuel's father had grown increasingly unstable.

Clara's father was heavily in debt.

The mine had become dangerous.

And the three men no longer trusted one another.

One morning, when Samuel's father opened the chamber, the prisoner was gone.

The door remained locked.

The passage appeared undisturbed.

No one understood how he escaped.

They searched the tunnels for days.

Nothing.

No body.

No clothing.

No footprints.

Eventually, they convinced themselves that Thomas had found an unknown passage and fled the region.

But he never returned publicly.

Never contacted his family.

Never challenged the forged claim.

And his disappearance remained a mystery.

Samuel frowned.

"If he escaped, why would he leave his family?"

Edgar shook his head.

"I don't know."

Daniel stared at the old man.

"You're asking us to believe a prisoner escaped after years of confinement and simply vanished?"

Edgar lowered his eyes.

"It's what happened."

Clara turned toward the sealed wall.

"Then what is behind those stones?"

No one answered.

She moved closer.

The mortar was old.

Some stones were uneven.

And near the bottom, a small draft passed through a narrow crack.

Clara held her hand beside it.

Cold air touched her fingers.

"This isn't a solid wall."

Samuel joined her.

She pointed.

"There's another passage."

Edgar looked up sharply.

Daniel raised the lantern.

Samuel studied the stonework.

Then he looked toward the iron rail.

An idea formed.

He found a heavy steel bar near the abandoned mine cart and wedged it between two loose stones.

The first refused to move.

The second shifted slightly.

Samuel braced his feet.

Clara stood back.

He pulled.

The mortar cracked.

A stone came free.

Cold air rushed through the opening.

Daniel lifted his lantern.
