Given five dollars and impossible expectations.

She fed thirty men.

Someone tried to destroy her reputation.

She found the truth.

Then she helped uncover the reason an entire ranch was being targeted.

But when people later asked what she remembered most about that first day, it was not Wyatt.

Not the goat.

Not the stolen tag.

Not even the applause after supper.

It was a quieter moment.

A man standing in the cookhouse doorway after stopping the sabotage.

A man she barely knew.

A man who looked at her with something she had almost forgotten how to recognize.

Not pity.

Not surprise.

Desire.

Respect.

Interest.

He saw her.

That was all.

And perhaps, Abigail came to understand, that was never a small thing.

One autumn evening many years later, she stood outside the same cookhouse stirring a pot while sunlight turned the ranch gold.

Her dress was mustard-colored again.

Plain.

No flowers.

Caleb walked toward her across the yard, older now, beard threaded with gray.

He stopped several feet away.

Abigail looked at him.

“What?”

He smiled.

“Remember goat night?”

She groaned.

“You mean the evening your entire ranch behaved like idiots?”

“Yes.”

“Unfortunately.”

Caleb stepped closer.

“Best supper I ever had.”

“You’ve eaten better since.”

“Not what I mean.”

Abigail understood.

She kept stirring.

Caleb came another step.

She pointed the spoon.

“Stay over there.”

He stopped.

“Why?”

“You’re dusty.”

“I work on a ranch.”

“And I just washed this apron.”

Caleb smiled.

“Twenty years and you still order me around.”

“Twenty years and you still need it.”

He looked toward the cookhouse.

Toward the table where a bloodstained bundle had once nearly destroyed her future.

Toward the ranch beyond it.

Healthy cattle.

Full water troughs.

New barn roof.

Children laughing near the house.

Everything that had almost been lost.

Caleb looked back at Abigail.

“You know what I thought when you got off that stagecoach?”

“That I was too fat to be a ranch cook.”

He winced.

“Basically.”

“Charming.”

“I was an idiot.”

“Yes.”

“You knew?”

“Immediately.”

Caleb laughed.

Abigail looked toward him with the same knowing expression she had worn all those years before.

“You know what I thought when I saw you?”

“What?”

“That you were too pretty to be useful.”

He stared.

She smiled.

“Turns out we were both wrong.”

Caleb walked toward her.

Abigail lifted the spoon again.

“I said stay there.”

He ignored her.

“Caleb.”

He kissed her cheek.

She tried to remain annoyed.

Failed.

“What am I going to do with you?”

He looked into the pot.

“Feed me?”

Abigail laughed.

The sound crossed the ranch yard.

Not unlike Caleb's laughter had on her first day.

Only this time nobody was laughing at her.

And nobody had been for a very long time.
