The black gate was visible again.

Its curved triangular upper section protruded above the surface.

Water rolled around it.

Then the ground near the eastern bank collapsed.

A long section of pasture dropped into the depression.

Fence posts tilted.

Mud slid into the pond.

Naomi gasped.

Malik looked out the window.

"Mom!"

She kept driving.

"It's okay. We're leaving the area."

Her voice trembled.

But she remained focused on the road.

Zuri began crying.

Naomi reached one hand toward her daughter at a stop, reassuring her while keeping her attention on driving.

The children were safe.

That mattered more than anything beneath the pond.

By midnight, the immediate emergency had stabilized enough for the responders to reassess the situation.

The lower bank had suffered significant damage.

Part of the old chamber's protective structure was exposed.

And several sections of fencing would need replacement.

But the farmhouse remained outside the visibly affected area.

The cattle had already been moved.

Nobody was injured.

And the dangerous zone was secured.

Naomi received the update while sitting at Dale's kitchen table.

Her children were asleep in the guest room.

Otis and Emmett stood near the window.

Dale poured coffee.

For a while, nobody spoke.

Then Otis sat down heavily.

"I keep thinking about the day we laughed at her."

Emmett looked toward him.

"Me too."

Dale shook his head.

"Enough."

Otis glanced up.

The rancher continued.

"We were wrong. She knew something was happening, and we didn't listen."

He looked toward Naomi.

"But tonight those measurements helped people understand the risk before anybody got hurt."

For a moment, Naomi felt tears rising.

She looked down at her hands.

The same hands that had pulled the rope.

The same hands that had carried boxes into the farmhouse after her divorce.

The same hands that had opened Ruthie's notebooks.

She took a breath.

"I was scared."

Dale nodded.

"So were we."

Naomi looked toward him.

Then whispered, "I thought I was going to lose the farm."

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Finally, Dale placed his cowboy hat on the table.

"Maybe the land needs some work. Maybe the pond needs a whole new way of managing water."

He looked directly at her.

"But you don't have to figure it out by yourself anymore."

Naomi began crying.
