Victor shot him a look.
“What?”
Sam said:
“You know everybody.”
Victor turned back.
“I know some people.”
Noah leaned forward.
“He was trying to find somebody before he disappeared.”
Victor’s body changed.
“Who?”
“I don’t know.”
“You heard a name?”
“No.”
“He had papers.”
“What papers?”
“Maps.”
“Receipts.”
“Old pictures.”
Victor looked at Sam.
Sam looked back.
Noah noticed.
“What?”
Victor said:
“Maybe nothing.”
“That means something.”
Smart kid.
Victor asked:
“Did your dad mention Road Saints?”
Noah shook his head.
“Any biker names?”
“No.”
“Grim?”
“No.”
“Sam?”
“No.”
“Raven?”
Noah frowned.
“That was him.”
Victor nodded.
“Anything else?”
Noah thought.
“One name.”
Victor waited.
“Bishop.”
Sam went completely still.
Victor’s face became unreadable.
Noah saw it.
“There.”
“What?”
“That look.”
Victor leaned back.
“Who’s Bishop?”
Noah asked.
Victor and Sam exchanged a glance.
Sam whispered:
“Thought he was dead.”
Victor replied:
“So did I.”
Noah gripped the edge of the table.
“Who is he?”
Victor looked toward Lily.
Then Noah.
“Not someone your father should've been looking for alone.”
Noah’s voice rose.
“Then find him.”
Victor nodded.
“I will.”
The diner door opened.
Cold rain air swept inside.
Two uniformed police officers entered.
Noah immediately grabbed Lily.
Victor saw the reaction.
One officer walked toward Mara.
“Got a call about two unattended minors.”
Noah’s face drained.
Mara looked horrified.
“I didn't—”
The officer glanced around.
Saw the children.
“Those them?”
Noah stood.
“We’re leaving.”
Victor stood too.
The officer looked toward him.
“Sir, stay out of it.”
Victor did not move.
“I’m not stopping you from doing your job.”
“Good.”
“But you're going to do it without scaring them.”
The officer frowned.
“We know how to handle minors.”
Noah backed toward the hallway.
Lily clung to him.
The younger officer softened.
“Hey, guys.”
Noah shook his head.
“No.”
“We're not here to arrest you.”
“No.”
The first officer looked toward Victor.
“Do you know them?”
“Yes.”
Noah looked surprised.
The officer asked:
“Relation?”
Victor answered:
“Friend of their father.”
Technically true.
“Where's the father?”
“Missing.”
The officer’s expression changed.
