A wall is not a gentle scratching surface.
Friction Can Turn Itching Into Injury
Inflamed skin is more vulnerable than healthy skin.
Repeated rubbing can remove fragile surface tissue.
Crusted areas may break open.
Existing irritation can worsen.
If the skin barrier is already damaged, additional trauma can create more opportunity for infection and inflammation.
Then the newly irritated area may itch even more.
Winnie Can Become Trapped in an Itch-Rub Cycle
The face itches.
She rubs it.
The rubbing creates temporary sensory relief.
But it also irritates the skin.
The skin becomes more inflamed.
The sensation returns.
Winnie tries to rub again.
Breaking that cycle is one of the immediate challenges in her care.
Simply Telling Her to Stop Cannot Solve It
Winnie is not scratching because she has decided to misbehave.
The behavior is being driven by physical discomfort.
Interrupting the rubbing may prevent additional injury in that moment.
It does not remove the sensation that made her start.
That becomes painfully obvious a few minutes later when she tries again.
After She Is Interrupted, Winnie Stays Beside the Wall
She does not always walk away.
Instead, she sits close to it.
Her shoulder may touch the surface.
Her head remains angled slightly away from the sore side.
Sometimes her body trembles.
Then she waits.
The wall that staff need to keep her from rubbing against remains only inches away.
A Few Minutes Can Be Enough
Winnie turns her head.
Her muzzle moves toward the wall.
She leans.
The same cheek makes contact.
Then her feet begin moving.
The cycle is starting again.
Severe Facial Itching Deserves Medical Attention
There are many potential causes of inflamed, itchy skin in dogs.
Allergic skin disease can contribute.
Parasites may be involved.
Bacterial or yeast infections can create substantial discomfort.
Underlying irritation, moisture, wounds, or other dermatologic problems can complicate the picture.
Winnie's visible condition alone cannot determine the original cause.
Her veterinary evaluation has to do that.
The Location Around the Eye Makes Everything More Complicated
Skin disease on the body is uncomfortable.
Skin disease around the face can create additional concerns.
