“What does Dad say?”

Marcus gave daughter a warning look.

Nora, traitorously, said:

“That you work too much.”

Serena laughed.

“Accurate.”

Nora held crayons.

“We’re going to construction site.”

Marcus looked at Serena.

“The real shelter.”

“Groundbreaking.”

She nodded.

“I’m going too.”

Nora asked:

“Can you draw?”

Serena looked uncertain.

“Poorly.”

“Okay.”

Apparently acceptable.

One week later, the first legitimate rural shelter construction began using recovered funds, emergency gifts, and a flood of new donations triggered by gala scandal.

Serena arrived before crew.

Marcus came on third day.

Not as donor.

Volunteer.

He installed bookshelves.

Nora sat on floor drawing.

Serena entered room.

Nora held up blue crayon.

“Want to?”

Serena glanced at Marcus.

He gave tiny nod.

She sat.

Nora drew a dock.

A boat.

Three figures.

One tall.

One blonde.

One small.

Serena looked.

“Who are they?”

Nora shrugged.

“People.”

Marcus smiled.

Serena understood enough not to push.

Their relationship grew in places that did not look romantic from outside.

Hardware store.

Shelter site.

Coffee before sunrise.

A school art show.

Marcus repaired Serena’s boat even though she bought one mostly because she now spent too much time at marina.

He accused her.

“You bought a boat because you needed an excuse to come here.”

Serena looked offended.

“I am a maritime philanthropist.”

“That’s not a thing.”

“It is now.”

Nora loved boat.

That settled matter.

Serena and Marcus did not kiss immediately.

Partly because Nora.

Partly because Catherine’s memory.

Partly because both knew public revelation had created an imbalance neither wanted to exploit.

Serena’s name returned to headlines.

Marcus avoided them.

Compass Fund became known, though Marcus still refused interviews.

He appointed independent board so grants did not depend solely on him.

Serena redesigned Ashford Harbor governance.

No single CFO could again control grant reporting.

Joanna returned as director of financial integrity.

She negotiated title herself.

Grant eventually pleaded guilty to multiple fraud charges.

Months passed.

One evening Serena found Marcus alone on dock.

Sunset across Savannah.

He looked up.

“No white dress?”

She wore jeans.

“Disappointed?”

“A little.”

She sat.

No asking anymore.

Marcus noticed.

“You stopped requesting permission.”

Serena smiled.

“You said I could stay long enough to distract you.”

“That was months ago.”

“I’m committed.”

He laughed.

Their shoulders touched.

Serena looked toward water.

“I’m scared of something.”

Marcus turned.

She continued.

“I know how to lose money.”

“I know how to rebuild organizations.”

“I know how to survive public humiliation.”

“I don’t know how to do this.”

She gestured between them.

Marcus understood.

“Neither do I.”
