“Based on one cracked housing and a failure sequence nobody correctly traced for eleven days.”

Finch’s face hardened.

Eleanor said nothing.

Caleb looked at her.

“Replace them.”

“How urgent?” she asked.

“Before the aircraft carries passengers.”

Finch immediately intervened.

“Completely unnecessary.”

Caleb shrugged.

“Your airplane.”

Then he walked away.

Nobody stopped him.

At 3:08, he pulled into Noah’s school parking lot.

His son climbed into the truck carrying a backpack and a cardboard model of the solar system.

“How was the billionaire airplane?”

“Fixed.”

Noah’s eyes widened.

“Seriously?”

“Seriously.”

“How much did they pay you?”

“Three thousand.”

“That's good.”

Caleb smiled.

“Yeah.”

He started driving.

Noah placed the cardboard planets carefully across the back seat.

“Dad?”

“Hmm?”

“Didn’t that lady say a million?”

Caleb looked over.

“How do you know?”

“You left speakerphone on when you talked to Uncle Mike.”

Caleb sighed.

“Great.”

“So?”

“She changed her mind.”

“Can she do that?”

“Apparently.”

Noah frowned.

“That’s lying.”

Caleb remained quiet.

Noah waited.

Finally Caleb said:

“People call things different names when they don't like the simple one.”

“What did she call it?”

“Business.”

Noah thought.

“Still sounds like lying.”

Caleb laughed.

“Finish your homework when we get home.”

“That means I'm right.”

“It means I'm driving.”

He stopped at a red light.

Noah looked out the window.

“You mad?”

Caleb considered.

“A little.”

“You should sue.”

“That advice from your extensive legal practice?”

“I watch videos.”

“Terrifying.”

Noah smiled.

Then asked:

“Would a million dollars make us rich?”

“It would help.”

“With college?”

“Yes.”

“And the mortgage?”

“Yes.”

“And could we go to Japan?”

Caleb laughed.

“Why Japan?”

“I told you.”

“Robots.”

“And ramen.”

“Right.”

The light turned green.

Noah became quiet.

Then:

“Mom would have made her pay.”

Caleb’s throat tightened.

“Yes.”

“She would have scared that lady.”

“Yes.”

Noah smiled at the window.

Caleb drove home.

He refused to let one broken promise follow him through the front door.

One week later, at 5:43 in the morning, his phone rang.

Caleb opened his eyes.

Dark bedroom.

Noah asleep down the hallway.

He looked at the number.

Unknown.

He almost declined.

Then answered.

“Mercer.”

A woman’s voice.
