He looked toward the FBI vehicles.

Then agents.

Then Nadia.

Then Adams holding a dripping garden hose nozzle near his feet.

His face went blank.

“Grant.”

Adams turned.

“Lieutenant.”

“What happened?”

Adams started:

“Suspicious-person complaint. She refused to—”

Nadia interrupted.

“Lieutenant Renner?”

He looked toward her.

“Yes?”

She raised her badge.

His expression changed again.

“I’m Special Agent Nadia Brooks.”

Renner swallowed.

“Okay.”

“This is my residence.”

He looked toward Adams.

Then back.

“Understood.”

“I was reported as a trespasser.”

Renner closed his eyes briefly.

Not because that alone was catastrophic.

Because he was beginning to predict the rest.

Nadia continued:

“I offered identification and proof of ownership.”

“You can review his body camera for his responses.”

“Then he used my garden hose to spray me after ordering me off my own property.”

Renner stared at Adams.

“Tell me that part is wrong.”

Adams said nothing.

Renner’s jaw tightened.

“Grant.”

“It wasn't like that.”

Half the street shouted at once.

“It was exactly like that!”

“He sprayed her!”

“We recorded it!”

“She kept telling him she lived there!”

Renner looked toward the houses.

Phones everywhere.

There would be no private version of events.

He looked back at Adams.

“Turn around.”

Adams stared.

“What?”

“Give me your Taser.”

“Lieutenant—”

“Now.”

Adams’s face flushed.

He removed it.

Renner took it.

“Firearm.”

Adams’s eyes widened.

“You’re disarming me?”

“Yes.”

“In front of everybody?”

Renner looked at him.

“You seem very concerned about public humiliation suddenly.”

Nadia’s gaze shifted toward Renner.

That sentence surprised her.

Adams removed his service weapon.

Renner secured it.

Then radio.

Then spare magazines.

“Go stand by my unit.”

Adams did not move.

Renner said quietly:

“Do not make this worse.”

Finally Adams walked toward the SUV.

Neighbors watched.

Some looked satisfied.

Nadia did not.

Humiliation replicated is not accountability.

She wanted documentation.

Facts.

Process.

Not spectacle.

Holt stepped closer.

“You okay?”

Nadia looked down at her soaked shirt.

“No.”

Honest.

“Physically?”

“Yes.”

“Emotionally?”

Nadia almost laughed.

“Ask me tomorrow.”

Holt nodded.

“You want to change clothes?”

“In a minute.”

The tall agent handed her a dark FBI windbreaker from the SUV.

Nadia put it on.
