The first breach did not happen at the door.

Romero refused to enter where Grant expected them. Instead, the team moved to the neighboring property, crossed behind a wooden fence, and reached the west side of the Miller house beneath the small laundry room window. The frosted glass was too narrow for entry, but it gave them sound.

A fiber camera went under the exterior vent.

Daniel watched from the command monitor, jaw locked.

The image was dim, tilted, and narrow, but enough came through: the dryer, pulled slightly forward; a panel behind it; Grant’s lower legs; Laura’s bare feet visible in the gap behind the wall. She was alive, curled in a space barely large enough to hold her body. Her hands were bound in front of her. Her face was pale, hair stuck to her cheeks, but her eyes were open.

Grant stood over her with a phone in one hand.

“Say it,” he demanded.

Laura looked toward the vent.

Not directly.

Just enough.

Daniel felt it like a hand around his heart.

She knew they were there.

Grant lifted the phone closer. “I, Laura Miller, confirm that I am leaving my marriage voluntarily—”

Laura said nothing.

Grant’s voice lowered.

“You think they can get in before I finish this?”

Still nothing.

He crouched.

“You think Officer Hero outside can save you? I almost peeled him off the pavement.”

Daniel’s hand tightened around the edge of the command table.

Torres saw and said nothing.

Grant continued. “Now say the phrase.”

Laura’s lips moved.

The camera barely caught it.

Romero listened through the mic.

“What did she say?” Torres whispered.

The audio tech replayed the faint sound.

Laura had said, “Dryer.”

Romero’s eyes narrowed.

Dryer.

Not Briar.

Daniel remembered her warning: If he plays a recording of me, listen for the word Briar.

That meant something inside the dryer area mattered now. A hidden drive. A latch. A clue. Maybe the proof Grant wanted. Maybe the reason he had kept her in that exact room.

Grant stood suddenly and shoved the dryer harder against the wall. Laura gasped.

Romero gave the signal.

A controlled entry charge opened the side service door, not the main door. The team moved through the mudroom in a tight line. At the same moment, a second team broke the kitchen window to draw Grant’s eyes away from the laundry room.

Grant reacted exactly as Romero predicted.

He turned toward the kitchen noise.

Laura used the half second to kick the dryer plug loose.

The laundry room went dark.

Grant cursed.

The tactical team entered through the mudroom.

“Police! Hands!”

Grant moved fast, too fast, grabbing Laura by the shoulder through the wall gap and yanking her forward as a shield.

But this time, the officers knew the shape of his plan.

And they did not let him write the first sentence.
