Grant dragged Laura half out of the wall cavity and pressed her against him, one arm across her upper chest, almost exactly the way hostage-takers do when they are less interested in escape than in controlling where officers aim. His phone fell to the floor, still recording. The laundry room was lit only by flashlights and the spill of hallway light from the tactical team.

“Back up!” Grant shouted.

Romero’s team held.

No one fired.

No one rushed.

Laura’s eyes were open, fixed on Daniel’s bodycam feed displayed at the command post through the tactical link. She could not see Daniel outside, but he could see her.

Grant’s face appeared over her shoulder, slick with sweat.

“She did this,” he said. “She set the device. She tried to frame me. She’s unstable.”

Torres whispered at the command post, “He’s still building the recording.”

Daniel understood. Grant’s phone on the floor was not accidental. He wanted audio of himself accusing Laura while she looked panicked and restrained. If he survived, he would claim police walked into a domestic breakdown caused by his wife’s paranoia. If he did not, the recording might still help confuse the case.

Romero spoke calmly. “Grant, move your arm away from her neck.”

“She attacked me.”

“She’s bound.”

“She did that herself.”

Even through the screen, Daniel could see Laura’s expression change. Not fear. Disgust.

Grant tightened his grip.

Romero kept his voice level. “You need her alive.”

Grant froze.

The sentence hit him exactly where truth lived.

Romero continued. “You needed her alive before we entered. You need her voice. That means she has value to you breathing.”

Grant’s eyes flicked toward the phone.

There.

Daniel saw it.

“Phone,” Daniel said at the command post.

Torres looked at him.

“He looked at the phone when Romero said voice. That’s what he’s using.”

Torres relayed it immediately.

Inside, one officer angled his flashlight toward the phone. The screen showed an active recording app and a typed statement above it. The words were visible for only a moment, but the camera caught enough:

I, Laura Miller, confirm...

The legal phrase.

Grant saw the officer looking.

His face changed.

He kicked the phone under the dryer.

Laura suddenly spoke.

“Briar.”

Grant’s eyes widened.

Daniel leaned closer to the monitor.

Laura said it again, louder.

“Briar.”

Grant snarled, “Stop.”

Romero’s voice sharpened. “What does Briar mean, Laura?”

Laura swallowed.

“The recording he wants has to say Briar Court. I was going to say Briar Creek.”

Grant’s face went white.

It was such a small thing.

One wrong word.

But it meant Laura had planned to poison the recording from inside it.

If Grant forced her to speak, she would make the confirmation invalid.

And now he knew she had been fighting him longer than anyone realized.
