Gity:

Where did a Black thief like you steal a car like this?

Silence filled the courtroom.

Renata watched the jury.

Some looked toward Gity.

Others toward her.

The prosecutor asked:

“What did you think when you heard that?”

Renata paused.

“That the encounter was no longer ambiguous.”

The prosecutor nodded.

Then showed the baton.

Glass.

Renata on the ground.

The moment Gity told Ruth to stop recording.

Then the blinking emergency indicator.

The prosecutor asked:

“Did the vehicle begin recording only after the glass broke?”

“No.”

“When did recording begin?”

“The vehicle maintained encrypted operational recording throughout the assignment.”

Gity’s attorney stood.

“Objection to classified-system detail.”

Sustained.

The prosecutor rephrased.

“Did the vehicle preserve the encounter?”

“Yes.”

“Audio too?”

“Yes.”

That mattered.

The Phantom’s interior microphones had captured portions of the roadside conversation Gity’s inactive body camera missed.

The defense cross-examination was aggressive.

“You are trained in civil-rights investigations.”

“Yes.”

“You know how to preserve evidence.”

“Yes.”

“You know what phrases create legal exposure.”

Renata stared.

“I know what happened.”

“You also knew backup was coming.”

“Eventually.”

“Yet you continued speaking provocatively to Deputy Gity.”

“I answered questions.”

“You told Deputy Ansar to remember the time.”

“Yes.”

“You wanted evidence.”

“Yes.”

“Because you were building a case.”

“No.”

The attorney stepped closer.

“You were already thinking like an investigator.”

“I was trying not to panic.”

The courtroom became still.

That answer surprised him.

He changed direction.

“You were afraid?”

“Yes.”

“But you knew federal agents could locate you.”

“I knew the system had probably triggered.”

“Then why afraid?”

Renata looked directly at him.

“Because a response unit several miles away does not make a baton beside your head less real.”

The attorney paused.

Then:

“Your vehicle was worth almost one million dollars.”

“It was a federal asset.”

“To Deputy Gity, it appeared to be an extremely valuable private vehicle.”

“Yes.”

“Luxury vehicles are stolen, correct?”

“Yes.”

“Criminals sometimes lie about ownership?”

“Yes.”

“Forged registration exists?”

“Yes.”

“So suspicion was not impossible.”

Renata nodded.

“No.”

The attorney smiled.

Finally.

Then Renata continued:

“Suspicion is not the issue.”

He stopped.

“Excuse me?”

“You asked whether suspicion was possible.”

“Yes.”

“It was.”

Renata looked toward the jury.

“The issue is what he did instead of testing it.”

The attorney tried to interrupt.

Renata continued until the judge stopped her.

The defense asked:

“You did not immediately tell him who you were.”

Renata answered:

“My identity was Renata Cole before my job title became Senior Federal Agent.”

No one moved.

“My rights did not activate when dispatch learned my occupation.”

The prosecutor wrote something quickly.

The defense attorney changed subjects.
