“Where did a Black thief like you steal a car like this?”

There it was.

Not implication.

Not coded language.

Not something that could later be softened into misunderstanding.

Clear.

Unmistakable.

Miles stopped.

His entire face changed.

“Garrett.”

Gity raised the baton.

CRACK.

“Garrett, stop!”

Another strike.

Glass collapsed inward.

Miles moved toward him.

“We haven’t even run the plate!”

Gity swung again.

The windshield fractured farther.

“There is zero probable cause for this!”

Renata turned her head toward Miles.

The younger deputy looked frightened now, but not only for her.

He looked like a man realizing he had just watched someone cross a line that could never be uncrossed.

Miles glanced down at his watch.

Not casually.

Deliberately.

Then at the dash camera.

Then back to the watch.

He was fixing the time in memory.

Renata understood immediately.

“Remember the exact time,” she said.

Gity spun around.

“What did you say?”

Renata said nothing.

He walked toward her.

For the first time she studied the nameplate carefully.

GITY.

Ashford County Sheriff’s Department.

She committed it to memory even though she knew she would never forget it.

Then a woman shouted from beyond the roadside fence.

“I’m recording everything!”

Everyone froze.

A Black woman in her late fifties stood several yards away, holding a phone vertically.

Renata would later learn her name was Ruth Okafor.

At that moment she was simply a stranger who had decided not to look away.

Gity lowered the baton.

“What are you doing?”

“Recording you.”

“Turn it off.”

“No.”

“Drop the phone.”

Ruth’s arm trembled.

The phone did not.

“I’m standing on my property.”

Gity started toward her.

Miles moved into his path.

“Garrett.”

“Move.”

“No.”

That single word changed something.

Gity stared at him.

Miles raised both palms.

“She’s not interfering.”

“You taking her side?”

“I’m stopping you from making this worse.”

Gity’s right hand moved toward his holster.

Renata’s stomach tightened.

“Miles.”

The younger deputy looked toward her.

She had read his name from his vest.

“Don’t let him touch that weapon.”

Miles swallowed.

Then stepped more firmly between Gity and Ruth.

Gity glared.

“You think she’s going to protect you when this gets reviewed?”

Miles looked toward the red light on his own body camera.

“I think the camera will.”

For the first time, Garrett Gity appeared uncertain.

Only for a second.

Then Renata saw something through the shattered Rolls-Royce window.

A tiny red light beneath the dashboard.

Blink.

Pause.

Blink.

Pause.

Again.

She almost smiled.

Miles followed her gaze.

“What is that?”

Renata raised her head.

“The reason you should remember the exact time.”

His face changed.

Gity heard.

“What did she say?”

Miles stared at the light.

Renata looked at him.

“They already know I’m missing.”

The Rolls-Royce was not her personal car.

Technically, it did not belong to any individual.
