He said it quietly.

The CEO nodded.

“Almost certainly.”

“Can we prove kickback?”

“Not yet.”

“Conflict of interest alone is enough for termination.”

“Yes.”

The CEO looked through the glass walls at the empty office.

The janitorial cart had been removed.

One dark stain remained in the grout where coffee had spilled earlier.

She thought of the porter.

Twelve years.

Same building.

Same work.

Lower pay.

Meanwhile the director used cleaning as an insult.

The cruelty was almost mathematically complete.

The chairman said:

“Go home.”

“No.”

“You’ve been here fourteen hours.”

“So have you.”

“I’m seventy.”

“That sounds self-inflicted.”

He smiled.

Then became serious.

“You can’t fix all of this tonight.”

“I know.”

“That bothers you.”

“Yes.”

He leaned back.

“When you founded Meridian, how many people?”

“Three.”

“You knew all three.”

“Yes.”

“Now fourteen thousand.”

“I know.”

“You cannot personally know what happens on every floor.”

The CEO looked at him.

“No.”

“But I can decide what systems reward.”

He nodded.

“That’s the right answer.”

She looked toward the audit data.

“Then why did ours reward silence?”

The chairman had no immediate answer.

Neither did she.

The next morning, the department director arrived through a video call with counsel.
